Evelyn Wolins Krakower

Valley Cottage, NY - Evelyn, known as Evie, passed away on April 20, 2020 from complications arising from the Covid-19 virus. Born in 1925 to Sadie and Jacob Wolins, Evie was predeceased by her parents, her beloved sister, Sylvia, and brother, Fred, her former husband, Lawrence Krakower, her nieces, Arlene Simon and Randi Eaton, and her sons-in-law, Christian Basler and Lance Heiner.

She adored her children, Linda Krakower Greene, Michele Krakower Heiner, and Glenn Krakower (Denis Poleck), and her grandchildren, Aaron Heiner, Amanda Heiner, and Charles Basler, her niece, Karen Koppel and Karen's daughter, Stephanie, and her nephew, Richard Baum, and they will all miss her more than words can say.

Evie's childhood, spent in Washington Heights, was filled with friends and fun with her siblings and many cousins. She attended Julia Richman High School and after graduating, worked in a series of office jobs. Evie fell in love with Larry Krakower and they married when he returned from the service in July of 1946. Soon after, they moved to Long Island and in 1953, the family moved to Valley Cottage, where the family enjoyed their semi-rural life, with Great Danes, horses, and an assortment of other animals. Evie loved all the animals and did her best to round them up even when they would occasionally stray onto Lake Road. She loved traveling with her husband to see his horses race at tracks in New York, New England, Louisiana, Florida, and California, and was excited to move with him to Western Pennsylvania to start a new life (and decorate another old house) when Larry began a new business.

After their divorce, Evie moved back to Valley Cottage and enjoyed the company of her friends, old and new, and a new love, Edwin Mead, her partner until his death in 2003. Thanks to Ed, she made many life-long friends from the New Jersey Police Chiefs Association.

She volunteered at Nyack Hospital and went to work in the Volunteer Office, where she was well known for her friendly smile and constant good cheer. In later years, whenever she was in the Nyack E.R., she would always tell people she had worked there and how much she loved the hospital.

Evie made friends everywhere she went, including during the past two years, spent at Tappan Zee Manor in Nyack. She enjoyed her time there and was grateful for the wonderful care she received.

Due to the current coronavirus social distancing restrictions, a memorial service in her honor will be postponed until a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Montefiore Nyack Hospital, or to the United Hospice of Rockland.
