Felix Shapiro Obituary

Felix L. Shapiro

Sarasota,Fl/Pleasantville - Dr. Felix Shapiro, M.D. of Sarasota, FL, formerly from Pleasantville, NY, passed away on May 27, 2021. He was 88.

The only child of the late Louis and Rachael (Berns) Shapiro, he was born in Boston, MA on August 30, 1932. He grew up in Brookline, MA, surrounded by music, playing piano from the age of 8, and singing in choirs directed by his father. He graduated from Brandeis University in 1953 and was drafted into the army, where he served in Communications during the Korean War.

Upon returning home, he attended Boston University's School of Medicine. It was there that he discovered a passion for helping people affected by mental illness. He had Internships at Mount Zion University Medical Center and Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital in California before returning east to do his Psychiatric Residency at Metropolitan Hospital in New York City.

He continued his work at Metropolitan Hospital's PHP, practicing psychiatry, and running groups, which was his favorite work. It was there that he met the love of his life, Ellen Jane Quinn, who was also on staff at the hospital, and they married on March 23, 1971.

They relocated to Pleasantville, NY, where he worked as Associate Director of Psychiatry at Northern Westchester Hospital, in Mount Kisco, NY, and held a private practice, for 30 years, before retiring in 2005. They had two children, Matthew, and Jennifer, many beloved dogs and cats, and remained in Pleasantville until 2010, when they moved to Sarasota, FL.

While in Sarasota, he volunteered at the Sarasota Music Archive at the Selby Public Library, where he loved to introduce people, young and old, to music. There, he also searched for a decent bagel or Chinese Restaurant but, sadly, never found either.

His greatest joys were spending time with his family, playing piano on his beloved Steinway, watching the Yankees and the Knicks with his son, listening to classical music, and eating good Chinese food. He was an avid pianist and photographer and was a member of the Westchester Photographic Society for many years.

Dr. Shapiro is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jane, his children, Matthew, and Jennifer, and his granddaughters, Caitlin, and Cecilia.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Hawthorne Funeral Home, on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sarasota Music Archive https://www.sarasotamusicarchive.org
