Gary Lockyer Obituary

Gary R. Lockyer

Gary R. Lockyer, a wellspring of laughter, adventures, and kindness, passed away suddenly in his home on January 3, 2021; he was 56 years young. He was the beloved husband of Jeannette LaFrance and the loving and cherished son of Gloria Lockyer and the late Ronald Lockyer. He leaves behind his two children, Ronald and Heather Lockyer, who will carry with them his love of nature, pulled pork, and kooky humor. He was the loved little brother of Deborah Dolphin and Lori Hodge, both of whom predeceased him. He also leaves behind a stepson, William (Erin) Vatcher. His many nieces and nephews will remember him as a loving and funny light that filled their lives with laughter, silver dollar pancakes, and awesome sledding tracks. He will be deeply missed by his extended family, many friends, beloved dogs and professional associates.

From an early age, Gary gravitated to nature. He loved to go crabbing off the train tracks near Bear Mountain, kayaking through Harriman State Park, fishing anywhere he could throw his line, and hiking the terrain of the surrounding Hudson Valley with his children and friends. He was most at peace when near the water, smoking a cigar off the back of his boat at the Jersey shore. Jeannette, Gary's partner in life and adventure, introduced him to the beauty of the ocean and helped him become a certified scuba diver, one of the greatest passions of his life. They traveled as often as life permitted, exploring the depths of Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America (as well as many stops around the United States). He made friends wherever he went and always entertained them with his mostly corny jokes and funny stories.

Gary was a master at finding the perfect greeting card, serving the best barbecue, and lighting up any space he walked into with his bright smile and unforgettable laugh. He had an impressive collection of Hawaiian shirts and fishing attire - both of which he viewed as casual or formal wear (with the right shoes). He was a kind and generous soul who has forever left a mark on anyone that was fortunate to know him. He gave of himself without hesitation and will continue to shine through his family and the friends he made throughout his beautiful, albeit short, life.

Burial will be private for family only. A Celebration of Life will be open to all at a later date.
