GEORGE COYLE Obituary

COYLE, GEORGEFormer Yonkers resident George Coyle died Monday at St. Joseph's Manor in Trumbull, CT, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was 87. Mr. Coyle was born April 5,1917 in Denny, Scotland, and came to the United States as a young boy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in England, where he met and married the former Ruth Jackson of Warrington, England. Mr. Coyle, who dominated the Yonkers boxing scene from 1935 to 1940, retired from the Yonkers Department of Public Works in the 1970s, and lived in Yonkers for more than 65 years. After his retirement from the city of Yonkers, Mr. Coyle and his wife were affiliated with the staff at the Woman's Club of White Plains, where they made their home for many years. Upon their retirement from the club, they moved to Yorktown Heights, where they made their home until moving to St. Joseph's Manor eight years ago. Mr. Coyle began his boxing career while a student at Saunders Trades and Technical School in Yonkers. In 1935, he won the New York City Golden Gloves Flyweight championship, and that same year, won the International Golden Gloves championship. Mr. Coyle was inducted into the Westchester County Boxing Hall of Fame, Amateur Division, in 1970. Mr. Coyle is survived by his wife, also a resident of St. Joseph's Manor; twin sons, Malcolm Coyle (retired YFD) of Garnerville, N.Y. and Ian Coyle (retired YFD) of Stony Point, N.Y.; and sons Maxwell Coyle of Yonkers (deputy chief, YFD), and Bruce Coyle of Livermore, Calif. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. A grandson, Matthew Coyle of Garnerville, predeceased him. Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 9, from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm at the Flynn Memorial Home, 1652 Central Park Avenue, Yonkers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, February 10, at 11 am at St. Anthony's Church in Nepera Park, followed by interment at St. Mary's Cemetery, 114 Sprain Road, Yonkers. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Coyle's name may be made to St. Joseph's Manor, 6448 Main St., Trumbull, CT, 06611. FLYNN MEMORIAL HOME 325 South Broadway Yonkers (914)963-5178
