GEORGE LEWIS Obituary

George F. Lewis, age 81, of White Plains, died at home of natural causes on October 30, 2004. He joined the US Navy at the age of 17 and served as a fireman on the newly commissioned battleship North Carolina and retired as Chief Petty Officer aboard the USS Forrestal after having served over 20 years of active duty aboard 11 different ships during this period. In addition to his naval service, he served aboard 13 ships with the Military Sealift Command for an additional 18 years. He loved the sea and ships and enjoyed visiting foreign countries where he purchased numerous dolls for his young relative for her collection. In addition to his love of ships and the sea, he became a train enthusiast at an early age continuing until his death. He was an active member of The American Legion, Post 135 in White Plains. Son of Nora (Collins) and Frank Lewis, he is survived by his first cousins: Pauline C. Oliva of White Plains and Charles T. Johnson of Lacey's Spring, AL, with whom he grew up in White Plains before he joined the Navy. Several second cousins, including Mabel Wilson, Patricia, Edmond and Thomas Oliva, and Jay and Timmy Ryan, all of White Plains, who remember his good nature and hearing of his naval adventures, also survive him. Reposing at McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home on Sunday, 6-9 pm. Rev. Albert Azrak of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel will offer a brief Funeral Service at 10 am on Monday morning at the funeral home preceding the Burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery in the family plot.
