Carmel - Harold J. Gary Jr. "a true gentleman", 70-year resident of Carmel, NY, died peacefully holding his daughter's hand at the home he built with his late wife on December 17, 2020. He was 92 years old.

Harold was born on September 6, 1928 in Cumberland, Virginia son of Harold J. and Esther (Williams) Gary. Harold honorably served in the U.S Army after WWII with the occupational forces in Japan. When he returned from serving, he attended Howard University. While there he met the love of his life Louise D. Giles. They married on October 22, 1950 at Croton Falls Baptist Church. Louise predeceased him on May 16, 2004.

Mr. Gary was a carpenter and contractor with his father-in-law. Following his job with his father-in-law he continued his education and received a degree in education from SUNY New Paltz and taught BOCES. Harold was also the Commissioner of Highways & facilities in Putnam County for almost 30 years. He was appointed a life member by the County Highway Superintendents association. He served on the Carmel Zoning Board of Appeals. Harold was a longtime member and former chairman of the Carmel Planning Board before he retired in 2018.

Harold was an active member and past trustee at the Red Mills Baptist church for the last 60 years. Prior to joining Red Mills Baptist Church, he was a member of Croton Falls Church where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was an avid golfer and member of the Mahopac Golf club for over 40 years- you could find him golfing every day. His family would travel all around the world to find a good place to golf. In his younger years he was a coach of the North Salem little league and the Babe Ruth League.

Mr. Gary is survived by his loving daughter; Cheryll Martin and her husband Harvey of Virginia Beach, VA, his nephew Webster Alexander Rogers III and his wife Joanna of Silver Springs, MD his niece Esther Rogers of Washington D.C, Angela Ivey and her husband Randy of Ashburn, VA. He was predeceased by his siblings; Thomas Gary, Elizabeth Gary Coates and Louise Gary Rogers.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday December 23, 2020 at 10 am at Union Valley Cemetery, Carmel, NY. Visitation will be held on Tuesday December 22 at Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster from 6pm-8pm. Due to COVID 19 we are limited to 35 people at one time and masks must be worm.
