Jack McGuire, age 10, of Montrose, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2007 after an inspiring, courageous six year fight with Leukemia. He died peacefully at Columbia- Presbyterian Hospital with his parents by his side. Along with his twin sister, Kate, Jack was born on December 8, 1996 to Dennis and Janet (Mitchell) McGuire. He is also survived by his beloved older sister, Claire, age 14. Both Kate and Claire displayed enormous love, courage and support through Jack's illness. Other survivors include his grandparents, Dennis and Ann McGuire, loving aunts, uncles and cousins and friends, too numerous to count and list. Jack will be welcomed in Heaven by his maternal grandparents, John and Dorothy Mitchell. Jack was a fourth grade student at Frank G. Lindsey School in Montrose. Throughout years of treatments and setbacks, Jack remained an outstanding student and impacted students and teachers alike. Anyone who knew Jack was aware of his cherished love of basketball. Through the years, he remained a player, a fan and had made relationships at the town recreation level all the way to the NBA. Jack touched the lives of so many people and taught us about bravery, on a level that most adults will never approach. Whether you knew Jack his whole life or had just met him, you were equally impressed by his character and composure. He handled his illness with grace and dignity, never complaining and always accepting. To everyone that has supported Jack and his family - friends, acquaintances, care givers and even strangers - we will forever be grateful. Visitation will take place at the Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 170 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose, NY on Sunday, April 1, 2007 from 7 to 9 pm and Monday, April 2 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Augustine's Church in Ossining, NY on Tuesday, April 3 at 10 am. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery in Cortlandt Manor, NY.
