Janet Everett Obituary
Janet Gertrude Everett, formerly of New Rochelle, NY, a resident at the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany, NY, died November 16, 2013. Janet was born May 5, 1921 in Mt. Vernon, NY, graduated from A.B. Davis high school and attended NYU School of Education. She served in the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve from May 1943 to September 1945 and was a Drill Instructor and a NCO for recreation. She worked for KLM Airlines for over 22 years and traveled extensively throughout the world. She was a leader in the Mt. Vernon Women's Club, Echo Bay Yacht Club and the Presbyterian Church in New Rochelle.
Janet was a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star, in NY, joining Minnehaha Chapter #227 in 1941. Janet's dedication led her to serve many offices within the Chapter & Westchester District. She served the Chapter on its 50th anniversary (1951) and the 100th anniversary (2001) as Worthy Matron. For 36 years, she served as the Chapter's secretary. In 1985, she was elected as Most Worthy Grand Matron, State of NY. Her administration developed a dedicated senior independent living facility, Pounder Hall in Oriskany, NY. As a veteran of the military, she strongly promoted the Order's projects for all Veterans.
She is predeceased by her parents, Janet and O. Stanley Gilchrest, husbands, Harry C. Kruger and Theodore M. Everett and brother, Gordon F. Gilchrest. Her survivors include her step-children, Harry Jr., Lorraine and John Kruger, niece, Susan Klug, nephew, Charles Gilchrest and their families.
Janet was thankful for her friends in the Eastern Star and the staff at the Eastern Star Oriskany campus. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Eastern Star Home, Day Care Center or Pounder Hall, c/o Pounder Hall #106, 1400 Utica Street, Oriskany, NY 13424.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM on December 15, 2013 at the Eastern Star campus chapel, 1400 Utica St., Oriskany, NY with a reception to follow. Condolences may be sent to Susan Klug, 289 West Highland Drive, Schenectady, NY 12303. Burial will be private.
