Joan Mattison Obituary

Mattison, Joan T.

Beloved Wife and Mother, Joan T. Mattison passed quietly in her sleep on Monday, August 20, 2012 in Newnan, GA after a long battle with early onset Alzheimer's. Joan was born Joan Margaret Tompkins in Mt. Kisco, NY in 1938. She graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1956, and attended Oswego State Teachers College, graduating with honors in 1960. Joan student taught at Altmar, Parish, Williamstown before moving to Ogdensburg to join George Mattison in 1961. Joan received her Masters' Degree in Education from Potsdam State, and spent the next 4 years at Madill School. Mrs. Mattison then moved to Sherman School, where she spent the next 28 years between 1st & 2nd Grade where she taught thousands of children how to read. Her favorite was the Adventure of Laura Ingels Wilder. She was a founder of the Ogdensburg Figure Skating Association, co-owner of Mattison Furniture, and an avid bridge player.

She is survived by her husband, George P. Mattison of Newnan, GA; her sister, Barbara DiGiacinto Jr. of Armonk, NY; her daughter, Barbara Ammutinato of Spring, TX; and her son, Scott J. Mattison of Roswell, GA, along with 5 grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at St. Johns' Episcopal Church on Saturday, October 13th at 2pm with a gathering at the Gran View to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
