Joseph Gannon Obituary
Joseph F. Gannon, 83, of Somers, NY, died on February 6th. Joseph was born in Providence, RI, July 28, 1933.
He was a graduate of Providence College, and received his PhD in Classical Philology from Yale University. He taught at Mercy College, where for many years he was the Chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy.
Joseph was predeceased by his parents Mary (Roach) and Francis Gannon and his sister, Helen Marie Gannon. Joseph is survived by his wife Susan (Ryan) Gannon and his daughter Vicky Gannon of Somers.
There will be no visiting hours. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 8th at 10:00 am at St. Joseph's RC Church, 95 Plum Brook Road, Somers, NY 10589. Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Somers.

I offer my condolences to Dr. Gannon.
Though I did not know him personally, live in a very different country, and am of a much younger generation, his articles on Aeschylus' Agamemnon in the Classical Quarterly in particular were of an exceptionally high standard, and classical scholarship has certainly benefitted from them. He will be remembered for a long time for this work to those in the scholarly community.

I remember warmly Joe's always trenchant comments on the Commonweal blog over the years. Especially astute in matters of language, but also thoughtful and wise in all his comments, he was respected and looked to by all on that forum as one of our most brilliant and valued contributors. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
