Kathleen Glatthaar Obituary

Kathleen M. Glatthaar

White Plains - Kathleen M. Glatthaar of White Plains, died on February 26, 2019. Kathleen was born on September 17, 1928 in Bronx, N.Y. to John and Mary (Commane) O'Sullivan. She was raised in the Bronx (and never really left), and graduated from Cathedral High School.

After high school, she worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company where she met her future husband. On April 28, 1951 Kathleen married Joseph B. Glatthaar at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, Bronx, N.Y., and they were married for sixty-six years until his death. She is survived by her, sons James of White Plains, Joseph T. of Chapel Hill, N.C., Thomas of Purchase, and Michael of Atlanta; daughters-in-law Sharon, Patricia, and Jacqueline; grandchildren Danielle (Vimy), Kathleen, Thomas H. and Michele; great-grandchildren AnneMarie and Lucas, as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives, both in the U.S. and in Ireland, all of whom will cherish the many wonderful memories. In addition to Joseph, she was predeceased by her oldest son, John, and by her brothers William and John.

After their wedding Kathleen and Joseph settled in the Bronx. While there they had three of their sons, and added two more sons after moving to Plainview, N.Y. in 1957. The family moved to White Plains in 1964 and have been there since. Kathleen spent her days running the household and raising those five boys, as well as volunteering at St. Bernard's School. It was a full-time job. After her sons were raised she travelled extensively, visiting, among other places, Germany, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, and (every chance she got) Ireland.

Kathleen was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, a long-time member of the Women's Guild at Our Lady of Sorrows, and was, with Joseph, a long-time member of Westchester Hills Golf Club, and she enjoyed nothing more than hosting lunches and dinners there with her extended family. She loved all things and all people from the Bronx and from Ireland. She was also a wonderful and loving grandmother and great grandmother to Danielle, Katie, Tommy, Michele, AnneMarie and Lucas, all of who affectionately called her "Nina." She was never happier than she was spending time with them. They were, more than anything, a source of unending pride and joy to her.

The family would like to thank Mary Creaven and her team of caregivers, who helped make Kathleen's final few years comfortable, allowing her to live home until the end.

Visiting will be Friday from 4-8pm at McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home, Inc. 491 Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains, NY 10605. (914) 949-7777.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Kathleen's name may be made to Hospice of Westchester, 1025 Westchester Ave-Suite 200 White Plains, NY 10604.

Dear family, this is a message from your mothers first cousins in England, Kathleen (Kate) and Sheila.
Kate has fond memories of meeting you parents and 'their boys!" way back in 1972 and always recalls their warm hospitality. Always knew your mother as cousin Marie, now we know why.
May she, Joe and John rest in peace. I am sure she will be welcomed in heaven by our father Michael your grandfathers youngest brother.
A sincere thank you to the lovely ladies who cared for our cousin.
All the family are in our thoughts and prayers. God bless you.

To all the wonderful Glatthaar's, So sorry I was not able to attend your Mom's services. So many happy memories of her kindness and thoughtfulness. Our families are forever entwined with the kind of friendships born in an era of community and neighborhood for both White Plains and St Bernard's as well as Stepinac with my brothers. Your Mother's expertise as a homemaker and parent is clearly defined by her boys who became outstanding men. (I was worried for a while about Joe who used to love to surprise the young Finn girls and embarrass us by catching us hiding in our pajamas when he came to pick up my brother Mike for a night out). I am sure the heavenly Finns were there to greet her with a great party. Love to you all. Teri Finn Latimer.

Just heard today 3/2/19 of Mrs Glatthaar's passing. As a friend of John throughout the years, I felt as though "Mrs G" (as I called her) was like a second mother to me. Always kind, generous and a lot of fun to be around. Needless to say both Barbara and I are deeply saddened by this news; but I believe that "John, Joe and Kay" are together again and smiling down at us, God bless them. Please accept our sincere condolences to all of the Glatthaar Family.
