MICHAEL MARTUS Obituary

Michael S. Martus, PE died September 13 in Chappaqua. He was 74. Born in New York City on February 28, 1925. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy V-12 officer training program at the University of Illinois and received a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1945. He served on the USS Atlanta with the 7th Fleet in the Far East after graduation. In 1946 Mike entered Cornell University obtaining a MS in Engineering. He worked at American Cyanamid Co. from 1961-63 and managed the construction of a coffee processing plant in Sicily, Italy. In Rome, he met his future wife, Mirella. He joined General Foods Corp. in 1964 and held positions there in senior engineering and as project manager including overseas assignments in Australia, Japan and England. He oversaw the construction of the eneral Foods World Headuarters in Rye Brook and retired in 1986. From 1986 until his death, he maintained a private consulting practice, where his clients included Consumers Union and the Town of New Castle. His passions outside of family and work, included sailing, travel, enjoying the company of friends and The New York Times crossword puzzle. He leaves his wife, Mirella, sons Stephen and David, sister Marjorie, granddaughter Isabella and daughter-in-law Sara. Services will be held Thursday, September 16th at 10am at the Beecher Funeral Home, Pleasantville.
