Patrick McGuire Obituary

McGuire, Patrick "Pat" J.

Patrick "Pat" J. McGuire sadly passed away after a prolonged illness on Christmas day, Friday, December 25, 2015. He died peacefully at home embraced by the love of his devoted wife, family and friends. Pat was born on December 12, 1946 in Manhattan, NY to Mary Catherine Diffley and Chester A. McGuire. The family later moved from the Bronx to Rockland County where Pat graduated from Albertus Magnus High School in 1964. After high school, he attended the State University of New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler, NY where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering (Marine) and a commission in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He began his career as a marine engineer on merchant ships, traveling the Mediterranean, Europe and Japan on American Export-Isbrandtsen and Esso vessels. After leaving shipping, Pat worked briefly as a designer on the Bowline Power Plant in West Haverstraw, NY and was subsequently employed by Albert Einstein College of Medicine as Assistant Chief Engineer. Pat was honorably discharged from the United States Navy as a LT. USNR on August 6, 1982 and retired from AECOM as Chief Engineer in 2008. Patrick was lovingly devoted to his family, friends, and community. He loved golf and "fixing things." He had a special relationship with the sea, adored his children and delighted in nothing more than his grandchildren. His presence and irreverent sense of humor, although sorely missed, will always be remembered.

Patrick was preceded in death by his parents Kay and Chet McGuire. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret Meyers McGuire, his daughter Mary (Todd) Hogan, his daughter Ann (Jeff) Broeg, his daughter Nell McGuire; his grandchildren Hailey, Freddie, Liam and Patrick; his siblings, Chet McGuire, Phillip McGuire, Maureen Leahy, Mary Paoli, Sean McGuire and Catherine McGuire and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 29th and Wednesday December 30th from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00 to 9:00pm at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, (vpfh.com), 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 31st, at 10:00am in Church of the Presentation, 271 W. Saddle River Rd., Upper Saddle River, NJ 07458. Memorial contributions in Pat's memory may be made to Valley Hospice of the Valley Health System, 223 N. Van Dien Ave., Ridgewood, NJ.

I am greatly saddened by and express my condolences to Margaret Meyers McGuire for the loss of Pat. Pat was a greatly esteemed colleague from our years at AECOM in the 1970s when we worked together on the Cancer Center with Harry Eagle, Tony Annunziata and Jules Perlstein.

Even If it was for a short while. Your leaving is a great loss to anyone who knew you. Rest in the freedom of fear, pain and suffering at your new address. Barbara M.

PJ was a good friend through our academy years, while working as engineers, and raising our families. We always stayed in touch and I will miss his counsel and friendship. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
