PETER FRENKEL Obituary

Peter Julius Frenkel, who was born in Zurich, Switzerland on October 30, 1921 died on September 27, 2001 at Hillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham, NC near his children and grandchildren. Mr. Frenkel was a Holocaust survivor who later became an advertising executive and real estate developer in the New York City area. He died of cardiopulmonary failure. Mr. Frenkel came to this country with little experience, but with great hopes and dreams. He fought for the United States in World War II, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was honored with the Bronze Star for bravery in capturing several hundred German soldiers. After the war, Mr. Frenkel returned to New York City to live and work. He began a career in advertising that eventually led him to found and grow one of Manhattan's most successful agencies, Pace Advertising. His career with Pace spanned 35 years, ending in 1984. In addition, Mr. Frenkel joined with several of his friends to develop real estate in Greenwich, CT. With his family and partners, he participated in the development and management of the largest number of apartments in Greenwich. Mr. Frenkel was a proud contributor to the North American Friends of Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research Institute (IOLR). The Institute is a joint venture between Israel and Egypt to cultivate food from the ocean. Peter Frenkel was an avid golfer and tennis player. He thoroughly enjoyed downhill skiing, and he loved to play gin rummy with his friends and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Ellen A. Frenkel of White Plains, NY; brother George Frenkel and sister-in-law Eva Frenkel of Kensington, MD; son Stephan R. Frenkel and daughter-in-law Terri Frenkel of Chapel Hill, NC, daughter Karen F. Jacobson and son-in-law Peter Lars Jacobson of Pinehurst, NC; and grandchildren Lauren and Evan Frenkel and Kersten and Lars Jacobson. He also leaves his niece Yvonne Middleton and her husband Todd of New York City, nephew Peter Frenkel and his wife Joan of Maryland, nephew Richard Amdur and his wife Melissa of Brooklyn, and niece Susan Coburn and her husband Ian of New Jersey. A graveside service for Mr. Frenkel will be held at Riversville Cemetery in Greenwich, CT. The family requests that donations be made to the IOLR, 265 West Main Street, Babylon, NY, 11702 or to the Twin Towers Fund, General Post Office, P.O. Box 26999, New York, NY, 10087-6999.
