Raul Cardenas Obituary
Tappan, NY - Raul R. Cardenas, Jr., passed away peacefully on October 24, 2019 after battling cancer for over three years. He was born in Galveston, Texas to Raul R. and Clementina (Munoz) Cardenas, Sr. on February 5, 1929. Raul got his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas. He later served in the US Army during the Korean War and was discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. After the war, he came to NYC and eventually earned a Masters and PhD degrees from NYU in Environmental Engineering. He was a professor at the Polytechnic Institute of New York where he taught for many years. Raul put forth tireless efforts protecting the environment including wetlands.He is predeceased by his parents, his brothers Hugo and Omar and sister Carmen. He is survived by his wife Mary and his daughters Dee Cardenas (Alan Altimont) of Austin, Texas and Patricia, son Raul (Nancy) and granddaughter Clementina Altimont. He is survived by sisters Sylvia Mitchell and Nydia Kanski of San Antonio Texas and many nieces and nephews, former students and friends. The family will receive friends at the Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Mass will be held at St. Anthony's Church 199 Walnut Street, Northvale, NJ on Monday October 28th at 10 am. Burial will follow at the Rockland Cemetery In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Hi Tor Animal Shelter (www.hitor.org) or the Valley Hospice of Bergen County (www.valleyhealth.com).

My goodness, Gentleman is the first word that comes to mind, for sure. Always reflected calmness and an intense desire to listen. This Young Fellow taught me many important things as I grew. Always had the time to stop, talk and share the goings on in the world and all the things he knew. Rest easy gentle soul, look forward to seeing you very soon. Always, love and peace!
