Ray Hartwick Obituary

Ray Hartwick

Ray Hartwick, longtime producer and production manager passes away.

Raymond Hartwick, who shepherded such motion pictures as The Untouchables, Scrooged, St. Elmo's Fire and Scarface has passed away.

Born in Manhattan in 1928, Hartwick began his Hollywood career as a teamster, in local 817, working on such films as The Panic in Needle Park and The Godfather before serving as Teamster Captain on Serpico and Taxi Driver among others. He became a Production Manager in 1979 and he would serve in that capacity on features including Annie, Out of Bounds and For the Boys. His producing career would include such titles as Brian DePalma's The Untouchables, with whom he also collaborated on Scarface. He last produced The River Wild in 1994. His legacy across the industry continues to this day as his foray into entertainment paved the way for three subsequent generations of successful film executives, producers and artists. Known for his sense of humor, generosity and kind supportive nature, Hartwick's mentoring of those in the industry extended beyond his family as his reputation for offering to assist others in their careers made him adored by entertainment professionals and executives alike; a reputation that endures still today.

He is survived by his wife Virginia Hartwick as well as three children Joseph Hartwick, Raymond Hartwick and Barbara Levine from his first marriage to Amelia Hartwick who passed away in 2013. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was 91.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope Hospice at donate.hopehcs.org or the Motion Picture Television Fund at mptf.com/donate

Ray was our neighbor at Worthington CC, Bonita Springs, Florida. We met him daily and he had every time some comments about our achievments on the golf course. Did you win? or something else. We were happy to be your friends with our end unit front doors facing each other.

We were fortunate to meet you, your Mother and Ray on our visits to Vermont. We met you on a hot Vermont day walking with your Mom from the Inn
home after lunch. We met Ray at your new house on the Lane. You left for NY maybe Westchester for
surgery for a brain tumor and now we know it was
obviously successful. We are very sorry to hear of Ray's passing and wish you some comfort with
memories and friends. You are in our thoughts

Jinny we are saddened by your loss.

Ray got me one of my first production assistant jobs working under an L.A. freeway in a mock refugee camp for Scarface.

A couple of years later, I co-wrote a movie called St.. Elmo's Fire which he was the production manager of.

I didn't know him well, but watching him work, I realized that movie crews are like armies and he was a general. Need LA to be a Miami refugee camp or replicating a DC bar on a soundstage in Burbank, Ray could get it done.

I always appreciated his kindness and had meant to say Thank You. Sorry to hear he passed. Condolences to his loved ones.

Ray was my brother-in-law, really my brother. I loved him. He was not only the best brother-in-law you could ever imagine but he was the most wonderful uncle to my two children. He was responsible for getting them into the movie industry years ago and was very proud of their achievements. Today both Missy and Tommy are successful producers of feature films and are eternally grateful to their Uncle Ray. Ray and my sister Mimi raised their family next door to our family. We were inseparable for many, many years, probably the best years of all our lives. He will be missed terribly but always remembered with love.
