ROGER PELLATON Obituary
Roger A. Pellaton, Architect, of Ossining died at his home on January 7, 2010. During his 83 years, Roger expressed his love of art and design, politics and nature. The son of Roger Albert and Alice Yvonne Pellaton, he grew up in Tarrytown, NY. He received a BA (1947) from Harvard College and MA (1970) from Harvard Graduate School of Design. He served in the United States Navy during both WWII and Korea. Roger designed numerous buildings in the Greater Ossining area, where he has maintained his business for over 45 years. He leaves a legacy of buildings that were instrumental in helping shape the look of Ossining. He designed landmarks such as Ossining's new State Street Fire Facility, Holla House Firehouse, a major addition to the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Village Hall and Police Facility in Ardsley, and the S.P.C.A. Neutering Clinic in Briarcliff Manor. He was awarded a Citation by the A.I.A. Community Design Awards for the Scarborough Engine Company Fire House (1992), and a design award from the Child Care Council of Westchester for "The Robin's Nest" Phelps Child Care Center in Sleepy Hollow (1989). Beyond Ossining, Roger worked on the design for the Vatican Pavilion at the World's Fair in Queens (1964). On this project, Roger met his second wife, artist and designer, Karen Eisin. Together Roger and Karen collaborated on the design for a new church, Saint Thomas of Canterbury in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, for which Roger won the First Honor Award, A.R.A. for Ecclesiastical Architecture (1970). Roger also designed several new buildings for the Fireman's Association of the State of New York at their facilities in Hudson, NY. Roger had a lifetime commitment to public service. He served as Ossining Town Councilman from 1978 to 81. His service to the Democratic party and Ossining civic life was recognized in 2000 when he became the second recipient of the local party's Steven A. Galef Public Service Award, at which time "Unbuilt Ossining," a retrospective of his designs (mostly volunteer) for projects never constructed, was displayed. Roger's civic involvement included presidency of the Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce and service on the boards of Housing Action Council, Interfaith Council for Action, Ossining Historic Review Commission, Westchester County Medical Center, Ossining Urban Renewal Agency, and Ossining Restoration Committee. Roger is survived by his sister, Odette Sims; brother, Robert; three children Roger ("Rip"), Nicole, and Gretchen; and granddaughters Paige, Natalie, and Rose. Karen, Roger's wife of 42 years, died in August, 2009. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. A memorial celebration of Roger's life and work will be held Saturday, January 16, at 5:30 p.m. at the Holla Hose Firehouse on Lafayette Street in Ossining.
