MURRAY, STANLEY H. Stanley H. Murray of Greenwich, CT and Edgartown, MA died peacefully Wednesday morning, August 31st at Greenwich Hospital from cancer. Stan was 68 years old and predeceased by his beloved wife of almost 40 years Nancy S. Murray on June 1, 2003. Stan was born in Port Chester, NY to Murray L. Murray and Evelyn P. Murray. Stan is an alumnus of both Port Chester High School and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. Stan was the ultimate family man. He was as proud as proud could be of his three sons and their friends. He also had the perfect marriage - a result of his generous heart and unselfish nature. Aside from his family, Stan's passions were for Martha's Vineyard, traveling and spending time on the water fishing or sailing. Stanley and Nancy spent countless years as travel journalists focusing on the finest hotels and resorts in the world. They were syndicated by major Newspapers and were the Travel Editors of many different publications. Stan sat on the board of the Relais & Ch~teaux Congress and was well respected throughout the travel industry as an expert on the world's premier destinations. He also authored numerous books about the Caribbean and Europe. Stan began his professional career at the Herald Tribune where he quickly rose to become the youngest circulation director in its history. Stan continued to work at "Look" Magazine before opening his own ad agency. In the mid 1980's Stan and Nancy began to travel and write, often with their three sons. After Nancy's death, Stan continued to write travel features as well as work with their sons' business assisting with copywriting. Through his sons, Stan was an active member of the Brunswick School community; a place of which he was proud to be a part. Through the years Stan was also active in many other local organizations including the Pickwick Society, The Cotton Club, The YMCA, The North East Greenwich Association, The Horseneck Club and Rotary. Stan even took Nancy to her senior prom at the Greenwich High School. Having been raised in Port Chester, Stan was a volunteer member of the Port Chester Fire Department for over 40 years. Stan was always there for people-he knew everybody and everybody knew him. He always had the answers no matter what the problem. Stan was a guy who could get things done and would expect nothing in return. Through his travels, Stan had a network of friends all around the world and he did his best to visit all of them and stay in touch. Larger than life and generous to a fault, Stan had an enormous presence and gentle heart, often referring to people as "lovey pie" and "sweet heart". During his collegiate years, Stan played Football and Hockey and achieved honors in speed skating. He was an accomplished woodcarver specializing in his signature hand carved whales inspired by his love of Martha's Vineyard. Stan's legacy lives on through his three sons: Graham Murray of Stamford, CT and Edgartown, MA; Shep Murray of Old Greenwich, CT and Edgartown, MA and Ian Murray of Cos Cob, CT and Edgartown, MA and his two daughters-in-law Susan Murray and Margo Murray. He also has three grandsons: Cooper, Tucker and Zachary as well as his granddaughter Saylor Nancy. Stan is also survived by his sister Arlene Klotz of Maryland, his mother-inlaw Fifi Oscard Steinmetz of Riverside, CT and nieces and nephews. A private burial was held at the New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown, MA on Friday September 2nd. An open house Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, September 16th at The Riverside Yacht Club in Riverside, CT at 4 pm. Funeral arrangements were made by Gallagher and Son funeral home in Greenwich, CT and Chapman, Cole, and Gleason in Oak Bluffs, MA.
