VIRGINIA KEMPTON Obituary

Virginia W. Kempton, 88, of Hastings-on-Hudson, died Friday, June 1, 2001 at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers. Born May 24, 1913 in the Bronx to the Rev. Richard Henry Wevill and Jesse Travers, she resided in Yonkers for most of her life, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1932. In 1936 Virginia received her Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Penn State University, State College, PA. She then continued her studies at Teachers College, Columbia University earning a degree in childhood education. She was an avid piano player, composing music and played the French horn as well. Mrs. Kempton taught kindergarten at PS #17 in Yonkers for 26 years, retiring in 1978. Virginia married Melvin Horton Kempton in 1942 when he was the first Director of the Veterans Service Agency in Yonkers. Her husband died in 1955. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Getty Square, Yonkers where she was a member of the Women's Guild of the Episcopal Church. In 1990 she moved with her son to Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. Her son, Wayne and several nieces and nephews survive Virginia. Two brothers and her sister Eleanor predeceased her. Visitation will be at the Flynn Memorial Home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. There will be a funeral service at St. John's Episcopal Church, Yonkers on Wednesday at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Kensico Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. John's Episcopal Church, 1 Hudson St., Yonkers, NY 10701. FLYNN MEMORIAL HOME, INC. 325 S. I was remember my kindergarten teacher from the 64-65 school year and decided to do a quick search. She obviously had an impact on me being I do not remember many of my teachers over the years but her name has always stuck with me and I remember thinking she was wonderful and loving.
