So sad to hear about the passing of John, a colleague and friend. What a great man with a great sense of humor. always positive and a man with great compassion. In our later years we became closer due to our common cardiovascular problems. He would tell me stories about his problems and it made my problem appear to be pretty darn minor. Rest in peace. My deepest sympathy to the family.

Mr. Gildea was a fantastic teacher that engaged his students and outwardly showed that he enjoyed teaching. He was my teacher for all of my High School math courses, and he was also my instructor for driver´s training in the mid 70´s. I´ll never forget his stories about a "red headed" kid that he would share with the class, no doubt to relax the students and to bring a human element and touch to the subject of the math courses that he taught. It certainly was an attention grabber! He was a very nice person, exhibited a lot of patience, and would always go the extra mile to help students when they were having difficulty with the subject matter at times. His instruction and methods no doubt prepared me for the math and physics courses that i would later take at the university and helped me to have the confidence that I needed to tackle the higher level math courses. My sincere condolences to all of his family, friends, and coworkers.

In addition to being a Cabrillo HS colleague for many years, John with his family was an across-the-street neighbor for more than 25 years. My family and I felt blessed by that association.
John's devoted wife, Carol, heard from me minutes after I learned of his passing.
I agree completely with the memory already supplied by Bob Lawrence.

Such a brilliant and kind human. I feel so grateful to have been one of his high school students. Knowing I wasn´t a huge fan of math back then, he reassured me that life was filled with endless possibilities to learn much more than math, that it was living with a sense of curiosity that really mattered. His inspiring and insightful wisdom and his humble kindness meant so much to me and have stuck with me as a blessing all these years. I hope he knew what a meaningful difference he made in so many students lives.

John and many other Cabrillo teachers of his generation were incredible role models and mentors for myself and those, like me, who came just a few years later. John was a wonderful storyteller and loved having an audience to share his many tales.
Will miss you, my friend!

Norfolk & Northeast Nebraska have lost a legend. We will certainly miss the stories and tales of your growing up in the Good Life. Rest in Pease John. Give our best to St Peter. Perhaps a brief message.

I am so sorry to hear about John's passing. I would walk at the mission pushing my granddaughter in a stroller and John and Ron would stop to see the " baby". I always said that they were "Sissy's" friends and I was just there. But I started going to Planet Fitness and saw John there too! I always kept him informed about "our girl". I enjoyed my conversations with John. I will miss his smile, and him.
