Nancy Ball Obituary

NANCY DUNN BALL, 84, of Leesburg, Virginia, died peacefully December 17, 2024, at Inova Loudoun Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Nancy was born in Hanover County, Virginia on October 25, 1940 and grew up on the farm of her parents, Rosser G. Dunn and Erma Perkins Dunn. She attended all grades of school in a one-room schoolhouse where she excelled and graduated at age 16. She then matriculated to Madison College (now James Madison University). In Harrisonburg, Nancy met a handsome Bridgewater College student from Arlington named Elmo E. Ball, III, nicknamed "Scuff". Nancy and Scuff married on September 3, 1960. While Scuff finished his degree, Nancy began her lifelong career as a highly proficient legal secretary working for esteemed Virginia lawyers in Harrisonburg, Fairfax and Leesburg.

The couple welcomed two sons, Elmo E. ("Scotty") Ball, IV, in 1962, and Jeffrey G. Ball, in 1963. The family lived in Fairfax before settling in a home they built in the countryside outside Lovettsville. In addition to her positions within law offices, Nancy enjoyed buying and selling antiques and collectibles, and was known for her discerning eye and ability to value merchandise. A recognized expert on vintage paper dolls, Nancy operated shops in Loudoun County and nearby Maryland, and also sold collectibles on eBay.

Elmo "Scuff" Ball died in 2009. Nancy later moved to Leesburg where she enjoyed friendships and activities including bridge, Scrabble, and painting classes at her Lansdowne Woods community. She was a regular at area thrift stores, always searching for great bargains, and she enjoyed trips to casinos to take on the slot machines. Primarily, she loved spending time with friends and family.

Survivors include her sons, Scott Ball of Winchester and Jeff Ball of Leesburg; daughters-in-law Kimberli Ball and Sharon Ball; and grandson Alexander Ball, his wife Katie and their sons Brayden and Landon, of Ashburn. Nancy is also survived by her sister, Barbara Dodd of Aylett, Virginia and brothers Sterling Dunn and Eddie Dunn, both of Mechanicsville. In addition to her husband, Nancy was predeceased by a brother, Rosser G. "Buck" Dunn.

A Celebration of Life for friends and family of Nancy will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the Community Room at the Blue Ridge Tower of Lansdowne Woods, 19375 Cypress Ridge Terrace, Leesburg.

A private memorial service and ecological burial of ashes will take place at a later time at Eco-Eternity of Camp Highroad, Middleburg, Virginia. Nancy Lee (nee Dunn) Ball
