Sharon O'Connor Obituary

Sharon Lloyd O'Connor, 76, passed peacefully with her family by her side on April 29, 2025, at Spring Arbor of Leesburg. Loved by so many, including her cherished kitties, Sharon was known for her work creating community on behalf of the Earth and all its creatures. From volunteering for Habitat for Humanity to lobbying on Capitol Hill, Sharon embodied the values of creation care. A natural communicator, Sharon graduated with a master's degree in the field from Cornell University. With her artist's eye, she also created beautiful handmade cards that let each person know their unique gifts. A resident of the Virginia/Maryland/DC area for more than 40 years, Sharon helped communities manage change. She dealt with nuclear waste disposal while on staff at the League of Women Voters, and she helped create dental clinics for unserved residents with Loudoun Social Services. She also created De-lighting the Night Sky, a dark sky awareness campaign and event in Loudoun. Sharon was an advocate for NarAnon of Frederick, Md. She was a longtime member of St. James United Church of Christ in Lovettsville. Sharon was also a trainer for Eden Alternative, a community approach to elder care, and by chance she helped design the Spring Arbor cottage where she spent her final days. Sharon was the daughter of the late Roy and Mary Lloyd of Rochester, New York, and she was predeceased by her brother David. Sharon is survived by her husband of 31 years, Michael O'Connor, stepson Evan (Avery), granddaughter Margaux, and her siblings Susan, Stephen (Anne), Henry (Diane), Janis Clifton (Rev. Barry), and Larry (Donna). Sharon was a devoted aunt and cherished her nieces and nephews: Chris, Gretchen,Casey, Tom, Heather, Emme, Zea, Hannah, Rachel, Rebecca, Katie and Liam and many adored great nieces and nephews. Sharon had throngs of dear friends whom she held close to her heart, and they will miss her dearly. A celebration of Sharon's life will be held on Saturday May 31 at 11 a.m. at St. James UCC on 10 East Broad Way in Lovettsville. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Sharon's memory by making a donation to a cause you think would honor her heart. Sharon Lloyd O'Connor

Sharon added a beautiful radiant light to her world...it shone so brightly it lit up many people's lives, definitely mine. I saw Sharon as the kindest, caring, compassionate, intelligent human being I have ever known. I kept the letters and cards she sent me close to 50 years ago. This is part of a letter she sent me when I was going through a very difficult time in my life. "Keep on chugging, kid- don't give up on yourself. We're all in this together, if we can just reach out and touch each other once in a while so as to remind ourselves of that fact we'll make it to the end of the line. And we'll look back and smile.."

Sharon was a generous human being who gave herself away to the many people, animals and causes that she cared about. She worked for justice and for the health and wellbeing of the earth and all its creatures. She served the fragile in many ways including doing training and advocating for the Eden Alternative, a creative caring community -focused approach to elder care.
May she who was so full of love and creativity dwell in the Light of Love. She will be sorely missed.

I got to know Sharon at Loudoun Family Services. She was a kind and loving person that was an inspiration to me. She tried to make our clients’ lives better and I see that this was a lifelong passion of hers. As a recipient of one of her beautiful handmade cards, I can say that she was an artist with a vision of how to make the world a better place for humans and animals alike.

Sharon was such a warm, kindhearted and talented person, and extended her love to all the needy animals near her and around the world. She welcomed us so actively when we moved to Lovettsville, and was a good friend to Dave and I for many years. She will be sorely missed.

Loved Sharon so much! She was always involved in a million interesting subjects, using her artistic talents to make everything she touched as lovely as her. So many fun times, "Jamin at James"( for which she made the sign), door knocking for politics, walking together at Martin Luther King March. I know she is enjoying her next spiritual life, probably organizing Meditation. Her million friends, human and fur, will miss her earthly presence.

Sharon was the "sweetest" person I have ever known. She was always kind to all and a champion for human & animal rights. I had the pleasure of meeting her during our free Annandale dental school excursions with Loudoun County residents. This was a combined program with social services and mental health when our local free dental clinic was just a dream.. Our planning
meetings always included alot of laughter and we became fast friends. I treasured her friendship over the years and will miss her more than words can say.

So very sorry to hear of Sharon's passing. Our family is making a contribution to ASPCA in her name. Losing a sibling is losing part of your roots. I think we all can agree that she is in heaven. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Love to all from all.

Sharon radiated light, and joy, and love overflowing, her love was a fountain that could not be contained. I treasure memories of her smile: quick to appear, impish sometimes, delighted, generous, welcoming, a full exhibition of love and joy.

Sharon brought joy and wonder to life. As one card I gave her said, "You are the artist of being alive." She epitomized the values of friendship, and we will miss her every day.
