Benjamin Wilcke Obituary

WILCKE, BENJAMIN L., 24, died Saturday, October 28, in his home on Lodge Lane in Louisville of a gunshot wound fired by an unknown assailant. Ben was born in Leesburg, VA, and lived in Maryland until 1996, then moving to the Louisville area. In Maryland, he was a champion youth bowler and also an outstanding baseball player, traveling with a regional all-star team to compete at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, NY. In Kentucky, he attended Ballard High School, as well as the University of Louisville, where he majored in business administration. He has been employed as a server and bartender in recent years by several restaurants in the Louisville area. He was also an expert in computer programs and troubleshooting, an avid motorcyclist, and a lover and collector of all kinds of music. Benny had a quick and self-deprecating sense of humor, and was always a cheerful and uncommonly loyal friend to people of all ages and interests. His older brother William preceded him in death in 1993. He is missed and loved by his parents, Richard and Janet Wilcke of Bethlehem, KY; his sisters, Ardith Keck of LaGrange, KY, Caroline Stephens of Clarksville, IN, and Madlen, also of Bethlehem, KY. A private memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2006 at the Pearson-Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Rd. in Middletown. Benny's family and his friends are welcome to attend. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his name to the James Graham Brown Cancer Center at the University of Louisville.

I knew Ben on one of the first days he moved to Louisville. We had Shot some basketball with some of his family. And we hung out almost every day. Unsepreable at times also. Your son was a great man and most of all my best friend. My heart goes out to Mr. & Mrs. Wilcke here is a Great quote.
When you were born, you cried, and the world rejoiced. And when u died in such a manner , the world cried and you rejoice."

When I heard what had happened to Ben my heart just dropped to into my stomach. It was hard n' still is to accept that he is gone, but I carry him in my heart and I know he's in a better place. I had only known Ben for about a year but I grew close to him. He was such a great friend and always brought my spirits up when I was down just by his smile. He was there right by my side during a difficult time in my life and was my shoulder to cry on. Ben did not deserve what happened and the world lost a lot when he was taken. His place in my life can never be filled or replaced. My words cannot describe the pain and hurt I feel and my heart goes out to his family. I miss him so much and hope whoever did this i caught soon. I will always love him for the friend he was to me. xoxoxoxo

To Ben:

I already miss you, Ben. This was not the way someone like you should have gone. You did not pass away from us; you were ripped away from us. I did and still do love you deeply as a close friend. I will miss you and our dear friend Scott so long as I go through this life without you. Rest in Peace, Nubbs.

To Ben's family:
I've had the privelage of knowing Ben for the last eight years. When I first met him and we became friends, he couldn't remember my name, everyone in the group made fun of it and eventually it became a funny story we told new friends. But, I will always remember him for being the one I could talk to when I was feeling down. During a particularly hard time for me about a year ago,it did not matter what time of night it was, Ben would come over and sit with me and make me laugh or take me out of the house even if it was just to drive in a circle. There is hardly one major event in my life that I don't see Ben involved in some way. He has greatly impacted my life as well as many others close to me. His love and genuine personality will never be forgot. I wish the best for you all as I keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Wilcke and Ben's sisters,
For the last 10 years, I have watched Ben grow up and become a great and wonderful young man. I will never forget him coming over and hanging out with my brothers, or the vacation we took to Florida. Over the years Ben became like another brother to me, and he will be greatly missed. He was always a good friend and ready to lend a hand. It will never be the same walking through the neighborhood or ever hearing his laugh. My thoughts and prayers are with you. He is missed greatly.

I can not express how sorry I am to not be able to attend the memorial service. It seems that here I am slowly losing the people who welcomed me into the neighborhood when I moved to Louisville. There are so many memories I have from high school that involve Ben and our mutual friends. I always felt welcome in his home and he was always so kind and friendly. He really did have an amazing smile and was worth so much more to everyone than he ever knew. I was so proud when I heard how good he has been doing lately with going to school and everything. He will be truly missed. My heart goes out to Ben's family, may God give them the strength.

Ben was such a great guy. He was always looking at motorcycle mags. and doing the crossword. The trouble was he never had a pen that worked he would pull out the pocket full of pens that did not work. He was one great guy. He would try to talk to me about motorcycles like I knew what he was talking about. I would just listen and tell him that he should just make sure he got a pretty bike. Until we meet again Ben.

To Ben's Family,
Ben was truly beautiful inside and out. I will never forget his beautiful smile and those eyes that twinkled. My heart aches for your sorrow. May God reach down and provide some kind of comfort. Ben was one of the most caring and thoughtful young men we knew. Know that he was very loved and will truly be very missed. But never forgotten.

I am very sorry for Bennys loss. He worked with me for some time and always had a joke or funny observation of what was going on around us at the time.
I will miss Ben and am very sorry for his family. I also lost a brother at an early age and know of the grief that such a thing brings. He is now with his brother and my brother and I hope they meet up and have a heck of a party!

Love you Ben!

Life takes us along many pathways and along the way we are hit by such tragic events as the loss of Ben for which there is no explanation. Of all the neighborhood friends brought into our home thru the years, Ben was one of my favorites. I had the pleasure of seeing him as an adult a few years ago and today I am glad that I took the time to hug him and tell him how good he looked. You will remain in my thoughts and prayers. God be with you.
