Elmer York Obituary

SCOTTSBURG YORK, ELMER L., 83, died Saturday, November 6, 2004. He was born October 24, 1921, in Clay County, KY, the son of the late McKinley York and Daisy Franklin York. He was married to the former Alma Bussey, a retired super market manager for Morgan Foods in Austin, IN, with 37-and-a-half years of service, a member of Scottsburg First Christian Church and Scottsburgh Lodge #572 F&AM and a US Coast Guard veteran, having served as a seaman first class during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Clyde and Philip York. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Steve and Mark York, both of Scottsburg, and Brian York (Kristine) of Cary, NC; daughters, Linda Craig (Mike) and Marsha Stewart (Phil,) both of Scottsburg, and Kathy Thompson of New Albany, IN; brother, John York of Hanover, IN; sisters, Barbara Cole and Eva Johnson, both of Florida, and Marie Mauck of Lafayette, IN; seven grandchildren; and four great-grand-children. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2004, at Stewart Funeral Home, with Larry DeWitt officiating. Burial, with graveside military services, will be in Scottsburg Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2004, and after 9 a.m. Wednesday. Memorial gifts may be made to Scottsburg First Christian Church, Hospice of Southern Indiana or the American Heart Association in care of Stewart Funeral Home.

I used to live near the supermarket when I was growing up. Elmer was the nicest man. I have always to this day thought he was the best manager that the Austin Supermarket ever had or ever will have. He was just so friendly with everybody. My sincere thoughts go out to the family at this time of sorrow.
