Very rarely, is one man able to impact the lives of so many. Mr.Gene took upon a roll, which far exceeded that of a security officer. This statement applies, during his tenure at Dupont Manual High and prior. He was the protector and father figure to many of the students. The friend and confidant to his constituents, and the students likewise. He was always there for the students, in there time of need. No matter what the situation was, if he could help. Listening with a concerned ear and offering advise. I can recall on many occasions, students being short on lunch money. Mr.Gene wouldn't hesitate to dive into his ginormous pockets, to help them out. I remember each year, during the last days of school, before Summer break. Mr.Gene bringing the Super Soaker water gun to school and the water wars that proceeded in the hallways of Dupont Manual High. My condolences to the Garvin family. Take comfort in knowing that the man that you so love. Left such an indelible impression, on the lives of so many people over the years.

Garvin Family,

I send my deepest condolences to your family on the passing of "Big Gene". He was definitely a "Gentle Giant" no matter where we saw him, from the halls of Russell Jr. High, to Broadway Roller rink or any facet any student would see him. He greatly impacted each and every student, our lives, our well being and he dare anyone to say otherwise. "Big Gene" was a protector and every student that came into his contact he became their protector and because of him we as students, as adults we are "Blessed". Matthew 25:21, says "His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord." Rest in Peace "Big Gene" We Love You, gone but you will never be forgotten!!!

You were a special man. You will be truly missed. I'm so sorry that I did not get to see you before your passing. I had a lot of good memories working in the store. That was my first job. I remember your mom would fix Sunday dinners for us. You would fix special meals in the store. I believe you were the one who gave me my first lobster. The cold cut sandwiches. You gave me my first gold chain for my birthday. You would pick Sharon and me up for school every morning and we would either stop at donut shop on Dixie or White Castle. Where did all these years go? I never got the chance to tell you what you meant to me. There are so many stories I could tell. I just wanted to reflect on a few that were dear to my heart. I will truly miss you.

You were more than security at Manual, you were my protector during my horrible ordeal.

I know you are up in Heaven flashing that big warm smile.

Love Karen
