John Penrod Obituary

PADUCAH PENROD, JOHN KIMBLEY, 83, died Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Western Baptist Hospital.

John was born on September 1, 1926 in Owensboro, KY to the late Walter Bryan and Lena Belle (Kirtley) Penrod. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a graduate of the University of Kentucky.

He joined the FBI in 1952 and served in the Oklahoma City, Minneapolis and Louisville offices as well as the Rapid City, SD and Paducah, KY resident agencies. After retiring, John served as mayor of Paducah from 1980 until 1984 and as deputy secretary of Transportation for the State of Kentucky from 1984 until 1987.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was also a courier volunteer for the American Red Cross Blood Bank.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and a sister, Peggy Eades.

John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Ford Penrod; four children, Karen Britt and husband, Neil, of Windermere, FL, Kirt Penrod and wife, Virginia, of Tulsa, OK, Leslie Leidelmeijer and husband, Bob, of Somerset, KY and Caroline Cappock and husband, Mike, of Paducah; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and his dachshund, Eli.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Milner and Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with Rev. Jamie Broome officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Kenton Cemetery. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
