Joseph Hoggard Obituary

HODGENVILLE - Hoggard, Joseph Eugene "Gene," left to teach the angels about marching and music on Monday, November 19, 2012.

"Papa" to his family, was 84. His wife of 61 years, Dorothy Walker Hoggard, had gone ahead to set up housekeeping in July of this year. Their love for, and devotion to, each other was the stuff of legends.

Born June 15, 1928 in Henderson, KY, he was a graduate of Barrett Manual High School. He was a very proud alumnus of Western Kentucky University and an Air Force veteran who served during the Korean conflict with the 515th Air Force Band armed only with his saxophone.

He and Dorothy returned to Kentucky in 1954 where he founded LaRue County's first band at the former Hodgenville High School. When LaRue County High School was established in 1959, he built from scratch what continues to be one of the Commonwealth's finest high school music organizations: The Band of Hawks.

He served as leader of the band until 1975, interrupted only by a one year stint as principal at LCHS. The last six years of his teaching career were as principal of LaRue County Junior High School. However, he remained involved with his Band of Hawks, serving as mentor for the directors who followed him.

A former minister of music at First Baptist Church in Hodgenville, he was an avid fisherman, watch collector, Hawks sports fan, great neighbor and over all "fix it" man. One of his proudest accomplishments was recently receiving his 34-year chip from Alcoholics Anonymous. He also served on the Hodgenville City Council in the early 1980's.

He was the only child of Rankin Bromley and Pearl Glenn Hoggard of Henderson County, KY.

He is survived by a daughter, Judy Hoggard Jaggers of Danville, KY; and two sons, Keith (Chris) Hoggard of Louisville, KY, and David (Jinni) Hoggard of Greensboro, NC; He took great pride in his eight grandchildren, Joshua (Megan) Jaggers, Lindsey (Dan) Cox, Zack Hoggard, Jackson Hoggard, Kellie Hoggard, Josie Hoggard, Jesse Hoggard and Ellise Jaggers; and he had two great-granddaughters, Nora Cox and Avery Jaggers.

Visitation will be at the LaRue County High School gymnasium in Hodgenville on Friday, November 23, 2012 between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. followed by a sharing of memories and music. A sunset graveside service will follow in Red Hill Cemetery at 5 p.m. officiated by Rev. Gordon McDowell. Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Gene Hoggard Instrument Fund. This fund was established by the family to purchase musical instruments for LaRue County students in need.

Mr. Hoggaard will always have a special place in my heart. He was my principal all my years in junior high. I have nothing but fond memories of him. I seen him just last summer walking around at the Flea Market in E-town. It was a joy to see him again and talk with him. He will be dearly missed.

I had the great pleasure of playing in the 515th AF band with Gene. He was always a great musician. And I know he passed that on to the students he taught. We communicated the past few years with email and jokes and photos. Would have liked to play at his memorial concert. As he is now playing with with all the great musicians. Keep the good mysic playing, Gene>>>

We had good times making music in the Air Force and got back together by email a while back to share memories and exchange jokes. I hope Gene can find a good jazz harpist to jam with in his new digs.

My deepest condolences for your loss.
You don't know me, but I remember Mr. Hoggard fondly, as he was my first band director at Hodgenville Elementary School on or about 1956 and taught me to play trumpet (cornet, actually).
I went on to study music at Indiana University and became a band director myself. I always remembered his advice to us band students, "If you're going to make a mistake, make it loud enough so I can hear it and then we can correct it, people!" (He never called us kids or children or boys or girls, just 'people'. I always thought that that was a brilliant idea, and copied it myself...thanks, Gene.)
He was a great influence in my life and I'm sure in so many others also. He will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege to know him.

Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. Mr. Hoggard was a positive influence on so many young lives, including mine. My fondest memories of high school are playing in the Band of Hawks led by Mr. Hoggard.

I loved your Dad, Judy. You and I knew each other from the Hardin Larue Co Band, I also play flute. Through the years after that we were in different music things together and kept in touch. He was an amazing man, so much fun to be around, I just lost my Dad a couple of weeks ago (your Dad and mine were friends through AA) and I know how hard it is. Thinking of you, your obituary was perfect for him

I never had Mr. Hoggard as a director (I was in the Band of Hawks 1996-2002), but my Mama (Carolyn Williams Henry) looked up to and respected him so much, and I did too, because of her. He will be sorely missed, especially by those associated with the Band of Hawks - Alumni Band will never be the same.
