Leon E. Tallichet

Louisville - 93 died at Episcopal Church Home Nov.12, 2018.He was the son of the late Leon E. and Irene Tallichet of Starkville, Mississippi.

He retired as Senior Vice President and Treasurer of the Courier Journal and Times Co., Standard Gravure Corporation, and WHAS, Inc. in 1986, following the sale of the Companies by the owners, Barry Bingham, Sr., and family. He continued working for the Bingham families as financial administrator for several years after corporate retirement. Prior to joining the Courier in 1958, he was Office Manager and assistant to the Treasurer at Brown Forman Corp.

His business and community activities included serving as president of the old Harvard Business Club of Kentucky, president of the local chapter of Financial Executives Institute, Board member of the old Newspaper Controllers Institute, Investment Committee Chairman for the Kentucky Center for the Arts, and investment committee member for the Community Foundation of Louisville.

He served several terms as Commissioner and Treasurer for the City of Ten Broeck.

Leon was among the original recruits sent by the Navy to its V-12 college training program at the University of Louisville in the summer of 1943. After release from active duty he returned to U of L's Speed School and received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1946. He entered the Harvard Business School the following year and received his MBA in 1949.

He served on active duty with the Navy in both WWII and the Korean War.

A saxophone player since high school days in Starkville, Mississippi, he was a member of several local dance bands including Dave Mehl's Swing Street Band, the Mellowtones, and the Newtones.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years (married 5/31/1947) Betty; daughters Jude and Kathy; grandsons Dr. Bryan McNeil and Clayton Shepherd; granddaughter Gaia Shepherd, and five great-grandchildren.

A private celebration of his life will be held by the family at a later date. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the WHAS Crusade for Children.
