Lynn Goddy Obituary

GODDY, LYNN FRANCIS CASSEN, 79, died Tuesday, August 7, 2012.

She was a strong and quietly assertive leader of her immediate and extended family, of her Temple and of the Jewish Community.

Born in the Bronx, NY, and raised in Indianapolis, Lynn was an honors graduate of the Indiana University School of Education. Lynn started her career as a first-grade teacher, then turned her attention to raising a family and extensive volunteer work.

Lynn was a past president of The Temple Sisterhood and a longtime Temple board member. She co-chaired many successful Temple fundraising efforts and events, and played a major role in support of the congregation's relocation and building of a new Temple on Brownsboro Road. With the late Joan Lynch and the late Betty Vine, Lynn operated a thriving Temple Gift Shop for more than 10 years. In other volunteer work, she was a life member of both the National Council of Jewish Women - Louisville Section and B'nai Brith Women. She introduced B'nai Brith's landmark Dolls for Democracy Program, bringing the lessons of compassion and tolerance to Jefferson County classrooms. A member of the Women's Coalition for Choice and Planned Parenthood, she represented those organizations at the Kentucky State Fair for many years.

Known for her talent for design and decoration, Lynn was an accomplished knitter and dedicated needlepoint artist. She also was an expert Mahjong player.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Manuel S. Cassen and Beatrice K. Cassen; and her sister, Gail Cassen Schwartz.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Leonard Goddy; her son, David Goddy (Cecilia Schmidt); her daughter, Karen Goddy (Kai Palchikoff); her daughter, Suzanne Weintraub (Bruce); her sisters, Susan Gordon and Isabel Cassen (Mike Stern); her sister-in-law, Carol Lewis (Sam); and six grandchildren, Sonya and Julian Goddy, Alec Palchikoff, Jordan, Adam and Jillian Weintraub.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday, August 10, 2012 at The Temple, 5101 US Hwy 42 with burial to follow in The Temple Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may go to The Temple or the Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road, Lilburn, GA, 30047 or www.lbda.org. Arrangements are by Herman Meyer & Son.
