Mary H. Daly

Louisville - Mary H. Daly, 94, lived an inspiring life to many people.

She was born May 31, 1927, in Maumee, Ohio to Henry and Winifred Hatton. Her family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan and thus began her love affair with all things Michigan, especially the University. She attended St Mary's Hospital Nursing program as a cadet for the Army Nursing Corp. She enrolled in the University of Michigan's orthopedic nursing program. While there she met the love of her life, Jack Daly on a blind date. They married and moved to Louisville, Kentucky. Their love and devotion to each other was exemplified in the way they raised their family- with a good mix of humor and guidance.

Her nursing career began at St. Joseph's hospital and concluded at Our Lady of Peace.

After her retirement, she began her decades-long volunteer service. This included starting a parish nursing program, being a special minister at Nazareth Home, Meals on Wheels, and numerous activities at St. Agnes Parish.

After losing her beloved Jack, with Emma (her dog) at her side she continued a rich and full life. A renaissance women with a passion for gardening, horse racing, researching her next investment opportunity, and a dedication to civic responsibility. This led to multiple editorials in the Courier Journal, letters of advice to Bellarmine College, Churchill Downs, children and grandchildren when she deemed they needed a nudge.

At the age of 70 she enrolled in the Ministry Formation Program of the Archdioceses of Louisville. This was a 2 year program that prepared people to live out their calling to holiness and service to the church and community.

Mary cherished her family and friends. She was an excellent listener and provided kind, practical guidance. She will be missed by her Catholic community, her incredible neighbors (the girls), volunteer organizations and most by her loving family. She will be remembered as a remarkable women with an enthusiasm for life.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years Jack; her son, Patrick, who solidified her dedication to horse racing; her very funny brother, Dick Hatton; and her parents, Henry and Winifred Hatton.

She is survived by her children, Sean, Shannon (Si), Kathleen, T.J. (Lisa), Bridget (Mike), Patrick (deceased), (Lori), Ellen (Rick), and Michael (Jamie); her grandchildren, Jack, Patrick, Abigail, Phillip, Megan, Mark, Ben, Sean, Chris, Jack, Brendan, Kathleen, John, Christina, and Andrew; and great-grandchildren, Madison and Lincoln.

Her Memorial Mass will be at 10:00am on Saturday, October 2, 2021, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1920 Newburg Rd, with private burial of ashes at a later date. Memorial visitation will be prior to mass, from 9-10am at St. Agnes.
