Meredith Chism Obituary

CHISM, MEREDITH "MERDY," 92, died peacefully at home in Idaho with family March 30, 2010.

He was born on February 22, 1918 in Louisville and was the youngest of three brothers. He resided in Kentucky most of his life with his wife Lorena and was happily married for 69 years. He retired from General Electric in 1983 after more than 20 years of service as a union expert tool and die maker, where he was fondly known as "chiz." He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf. He was a long standing member of the Louisville Casting Club and successfully competed at the national level on numerous occasions. He was also a master craftsman who was described by family and friends as able to "fix or make anything." At the age of 90 he mastered the art of chip carving creating many pieces that will be enjoyed by family and friends serving as wonderful reminders. Merdy will be most remembered for his wit and never ending sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife, Lorena; daughter, Lola Gross; two granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; and many many friends.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Online condolences for the family may be let at www.buckmillerhann.com

When I told my grandfather (Irvin Macy) that I was going to work in bldg. 3, he told me to be sure and look up Chism. He said Chis was a really good fisherman. That was the start of a long and rewarding relationship. Chis introduced me to another fisherman by the name of George Brockman. The memories I have of those two guys keeps me smiling (and laughing) to this day. And I still catch plenty of fish doing the things they taught me to do. I will always cherish the time I spent with Meredith.

Chis was the best mentor, I honor him by being a good mentor myself. All my grandchildren know about goesintos and goesontos. My most cherished tool is a step micrometer he invented and made. I'll never forget.
