Michael Dwayne Acklin
Michael Dwayne Acklin, 25, of Louisville, died Saturday, November 15, 2003, in Baghdad, Iraq. He was a sergeant in the US Army and a member of Christ Temple Apostolic Church. He is survived by his parents, Dorothy and Michael Acklin; his grandparents, Herschel Johnson and Barbara and Eugene Acklin; and several uncles and aunts. His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Temple Apostolic Church, 723 S. 45th St., with burial in Zachary Taylor National Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-4 p.m. Tuesday at G.C. Williams Funeral Home and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

I do not know you or your son, but as a veteran and the soon to Mom of a Marine...I truly believe that there is a special place in heaven for those that protect so many and expect nothing in return.

My son was with the 101st Airborne Air Assault in Mosul in 2003. I don't know if my son knew SGT Acklin, but i do know that these were brave young men that scarificed their all for our freedom and that of others. My condolences to the family and may God bless. As a father of a soldier, I know what its like to wonder whats going on over there with your child. My son came home safe after three tours and I salute all of our brave soldiers for their sacrifices.

To the family of Michael Acklin:
I never met SGT Acklin, but he was the best friend of my husband Michael, and until this every day I can see how SGT Acklin impacted my husband's life. I live here at Fort Polk and attend New Testament Christian church, and while we were at a banquet celebrating the Pastors anniversary there, SGT Acklin appeared in one of the pictures during a slide show that had been put together for the guests. Immediately that brought tears to my husbands eyes, and it was such a coincidence and surprise that SGT Acklin would be in one of those pictures. SGT Acklin is still loved and missed so dearly by my husband, because of his heart and the example of his life that he led through Jesus. I wish that I could of met him, but I do feel his presence, through the pain and love that my husband still carries for him until this very day, and because of that it is a true testimony that SGT Acklin lived with all his heart, mind, and soul for the King of Kings.SGT Acklin you are so very missed by my husband and to his family he touched my husband's life in a special way and still does.

I was deeply moved when I read his guest book and the bio of him. His Bishop stated it best. I thank God for the time that he allowed Michael to be with you.
We can never question God. Michael had a "heart" for Christ and his life reflected that. Michael was clearly a Soldier for Christ and I thank God that he no longer has to suffer. I am trusting God to heal the family's pain and to help you all to realize that "...weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning..."

I just found out today about micheal. I was in basic training with him and his locker was across from mine. What a great guy is all I can think and got me through some rough times with his up beat personality and his soul big as his heart. Good Christian man he was. I knew Mike from Fort Campbell and he was an outstanding man. Loved God and could always be found at the church. I left for Germany and read his name in the list of those who died in Iraq, I mourn for him but I know that in heaven, Great is his Reward!

When the call rings out the exceptional answer. I didn't know your son but I feel he was such a person. In a sense we all are his family because he died protecting us all. Please take heart in the fact that the young man you raised is admired by every one of us. Governments start wars and the exceptional stand up to do their duty. Brave Sgt. Acklin, may you rest in peace knowing you will be reunited with your beautiful family. They await the day when you will lead them into God's kingdom. Though we are sad at your passing, we celebrate one who was truly exceptional.

I recently purchased a memory bracelet with the name of a fallen serviceman. I too serve in the US military, and looked up his name on the internet hoping to find more about this stranger's name engraved on the metal bracelet that i wear around my wrist. I was moved by everything that I read and I am proud to wear the name of this fallen soldier. I consider it a privelege to wear this bracelet, and in a way I feel as if SGT Acklin is a part of my life now.

I have very fond memories of your son. I remember once having a talk with him before the war when the rigors of garrison military life were weighing heavy on him. It seemed to cheer him up. He returned the favor ten-fold to me when he could see the hectic pace of the military doing the same to me. He always had such a big warm smile, and a compassionate, caring and unbiased ear for everyone else's weighty burdens. The continual gestures of generosity he bestowed on his fellow man are a precious momento of your sons essence that all of us that served with him will always carry inside of us.
