Paul Culbertson Obituary

Paul Trauger Culbertson, Jr.

Louisville - Paul Trauger Culbertson, Jr. passed into his heavenly home on April 19, 2021 at age 92. He was born February 2, 1929 in Washington, D.C. to Paul Trauger Culbertson, Sr. and Maria Bisset Culbertson. The family moved to Darnestown, MD in the 1930's to what the family fondly referred to as "The Farm". His father, a Foreign Service Diplomat representing the U.S. in Spain and in Mexico, undoubtedly passed along his keen sense of diplomacy to Paul.

Paul graduated from Massanutten Military Academy and completed his B.S. at the University of Maryland. He was active in the Darnestown Presbyterian Church and its choir where he met his wife, Nita. They were married for more than 63 years until Nita's passing in 2015. Together, they loved the outdoors, antiquing, bridge, hosting get-togethers, and their family.

Paul was immensely talented with tools and common sense. He built his first home by himself with help from family and friends. His professional career was in management as a systems analyst engineer for General Electric. He transferred from Maryland to G.E.'s Louisville Appliance Park in 1966.

He was an engineer at heart, a skilled woodworker, and in all things mechanical that needed "fixing". He had developed a vast knowledge about how things work and pursued excellence. He gave of these talents whenever a need arose, be it with his children, neighbors or the ongoing maintenance of Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church whose oldest chapel dates back to 1866.

Music was a joy throughout his life, and he was blessed with perfect pitch as a tenor. From the Glee Club at University of MD, to Choir and Choir Director at Darnestown Presbyterian Church, to Choir at John Knox Presbyterian Church, to the Thoroughbred Barbershop Chorus, to Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church Choir and handbells, to 20 years with the Louisville Chorus. He loved music boxes, classical music, in addition to playing the accordion, piano and organ.

Paul was well known for his extraordinary kindness and patience, in addition to his breadth of skills and knowledge. Survived by his two children, Julyanne Culbertson and Paul T. Culbertson, III and three adoring grandchildren: Ben, Alexandra and Meredith. He will forever be missed, and we are forever grateful for blessing us with his incredible kindness for over 92 years.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Paul on Saturday, May 15, 2021, 11:00 AM, at Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church. The Family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions to Paul's memory be made to the music ministry at Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church, Pewee Valley, KY.

For July and family
I know no words can fill the void you are experiencing. It's devastating o lose our parents. Your dad lived a full life and he and my dad shared experiences at GE. Please know we are thinking of you and holding you in prayer.

I'm saddened to hear of Paul's passing. He and I shared the risers at many Thoroughbred rehearsals and performances. May he rest in peace.

So very sad to hear of Paul's passing. He and Nita were wonderful friends at John Knox Presbyterian Church. I really enjoyed singing with him in the choir. He will be missed by all who knew him.

My daughter, Cathy Grant, and I are so saddened to hear about Paul's passing. We both enjoyed our time with him in the choir at John Knox, and I, especially, was grateful for the many times he helped me with the tenor parts. Though it has been a while since we had seen him, his joyful personality and cheerful smile will always be a fond memory.

Paul was a wonderful Christian and a very special member of the John Knox choir (even singing with us on occasion after he transferred to Pewee Valley PC). He will be missed, not just by his family, but by the many friends he made through his musical talents.
