The Palmquist Family

October 25, 2009

My grandparents, Art and Jane Woolson were friends of Mr. Willingter in Louisville and I will always remember his funny way and amazingly positive approach to life. He always took the time to be genuinely interested in our life and give fresh perspective to our "dilemas at hand". He was a true southern gentleman and a remarkable influence on our family's lives. I am certain that as Paul held the gate open for others to enter heaven, that God welcomed him in and declared, "Well done good and faithful servant!".

Like Alice, I was one of Mr. Willingter's students at Atherton, and he was one of my favorite teachers of all time. He was a seemingly ageless, fascinating gentleman and though he taught rather tough English classes, words are inadequate to say how much I appreciate his dedication to his subject and his desire to help his students.

I saw him at an Atherton reunion several years ago, and had the chance to let him know that I was writing civil war history and actually getting paid for it! He could not have been more delighted, and it was wonderful to get to see and chat with him one more time.

My sincere condolences to his family, who will miss him greatly, but we remain secure in the knowledge that we will all be together again one day. Until then, I'm sure he's working with the angels on grammar and syntax. Rest well, Mr. W., you are definitely missed.

I was a student of Paul at Atherton. I am a member of Broadway Baptist Church and always enjoyed seeing him there. He was always so friendly and gracious and had great memories of his teaching experiences. He will be missed at church.
