Raymond Hawkins Obituary

Raymond R. Hawkins, 78, of Albuquerque, NM, died Sunday, March 16, 2003. Mr. Hawkins attended the Unites States Merchant Marine Academy and received his Marine engineer degree. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and later retired from the United States Navy as a lieutenant JG. Mr. Hawkins was a member of The Cathedral Church of St. John's in New Mexico since 1984, where he served in the vestry. He retired from the railroad, having served as president and general manager of Kentucky & Indiana Terminal Railroad Company and director of labor relations for Southern Railway Company in Washington, DC. He later became an independent arbitrator and was a member of the National Association of Arbitrators. Mr. Hawkins was also a member of the Albuquerque Rotary Club, the Louisville Chamber of Commerce, the New Albany, IN, Area Chamber of Commerce, where he served as vice president and director, The Urban League of Louisville, Falls Regional Health Planning Council, Falls Cities Area Council, Boy Scouts of America and the Lions Club. He graduated from the University of Louisville School of Law. He is survived by his wife, Charlta A. Hawkins; a son, R. Richard Hawkins II of Santa Clara, CA; daughters, Valerie Peavey and her husband, Fred, of Richmond, TX, and Denise Hawkins of Bloomington, IN; a stepson, W.R. "Bill" Humphries and his wife, Carol, of Lindrith, NM; five grandchildren, Michael Peavey, Brandon Peavey, Christopher Hawkins, Heidi Humphries and Cheryl Knight; and two great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service was held on Wednesday at his church in Albuquerque. His remains will be interred in Louisville. Memorial visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 22, 2003, with the service following at noon, at family-owned Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the US Merchant Marine Academy Foundation Inc., Babson Center, Kings Point, NY 11024 or a charity of the donor's choice.
