Stemle, Robert J.,

88, died Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, IN.

He was born August 22, 1926 in New Albany, IN to Edward C. and Marie Goulding Stemle. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughters, Lisa Katherine and Jennifer Sue Stemle. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Clarksville and retired from General Electric Co., where he was an accountant for 38 years. He was a signalman in the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II, and he capitalized on the GI Bill to attend Indiana University, where he graduated with honors.

He was an avid golfer and all-around sports enthusiast, a loyal IU Hoosiers fan and also a Louisville Cardinals fan. He was a member of the old New Albany Country Club, where he caddied in his youth, and he was an enthusiastic bridge player. His brothers and longtime friends still called him by his childhood nickname, "Mainie." He was devoted to his family and attended Mass regularly, including daily after his retirement in 1990. He was a gentle, kind and generous man who helped many people, and he will be greatly missed.

Survivors include wife of 61years, Betty (Kaelin) Stemle; daughters, Judy Strange and Angela Cash and her husband, Michael; son, Cary Stemle and his wife, Andrea Wasson Stemle; grandchildren, Brandon Strange and his wife, Jen, Jessica Strange and Kaelin Cash; great-grandchildren, Ashton, Reece, Graham, and Caroline

brothers, Edward C. Stemle, Jr. and his wife, Terry and James W. Stemle and his wife, Margie; and sisters, Margaret A. Smith and Marilyn J. Jarboe and her husband, David.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring St., New Albany. A brief prayer service begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. His funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 316 N. Sherwood Ave., Clarksville, with burial to follow in Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Jeffersonville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to: St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church or Our Lady of Providence High School.
