BILLERICA -- Anthony R. "Duke" Diaz Jr., age 86, husband of Matilda (Tartaglia) Diaz died Sunday at the Wilmington Health Care Center.
He was born in Boston, October 23, 1924, a son of the late Anthony R. Sr. and Helen (Story) Diaz and lived in Billerica for most of his life.
Mr. Diaz served in the US Marine Corps during WW II and was a Police Officer for the Town of Billerica for 10 years serving as its first Concord River Patrolman.
He was the owner of Dukes Oil Co, Duke's Donutland Restaurant and Duke's Canteen Service, and was a member of the VFW Solomon Post and the Billerica Lodge of Elks.
Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Stephen Diaz and his wife Dianne of Billerica and Anthony R. "Duke" Diaz III and his wife Susan of CT; one daughter Lorraine Smith of Chelmsford; his brother, Francis Diaz and his wife Maureen of Chelmsford and three grandchildren Christine, Stephen and Evan. He was also the father-in-law of the late David Smith.

Funeral Thursday from the SWEENEY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica at 8 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be held in St. Theresa Church, Billerica at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. I remember my Uncle Duke as always friendly to my brother and I. I remember him getting excited over the football games that were frequently on t.v. during our visits. One of my most vivid memories of childhood was when he took us on a boat ride on the river. The memory will go on.

As his nephew growing up I always had great respect for my Uncle Duke. He was a businessman and a police officer and as such a great asset to the community. I recall many family times that we all spent at his home in Billerica. He will be missed.
