He was born in Quincy on Feb. 7, 1924, and attended Mechanic Arts High School in Boston.
Mr. Harcourt served in the Army during World War II, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He graduated from Fitchburg State Teacher's College and Columbia University in New York City, and began his teaching career at Bourne High School. Mr. Harcourt was a professor of engineering for 30 years at Lowell Technological Institute. He was also a registered professional engineer. After retiring, he served as a volunteer at the Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park.
He had a lifelong interest in trains, canals, books and classical music. He also enjoyed spending summers with his family at the home he built on Cape Cod, sailing and the spending time on the ocean.
He is survived by his children, Andrew Bernard Harcourt of Deerfield, Patricia Mary Harcourt of Falmouth, Philip Eugene Harcourt of Uxbridge, Dr. Paul Gerard Harcourt of Tewksbury and David Matthew Harcourt of Charlotte, Vt.; a sister, Elizabeth Cizek of Medomak, Maine; and 14 grandchildren.
