She was born in Cambridge on May 22, 1932, a daughter of the late Leroy and Annie (Livingston) Smith. She was raised in Arlington, and lived in Tewksbury for more than 50 years.
Before retiring in 2000, she was employed with Getronics, formerly Wang Laboratories, in Lowell. In her earlier years, Mrs. Hathaway worked in the treasurer's office at Tewksbury Hospital.
She was a frequent visitor to the Tewksbury Senior Drop-In Center, and a member of the Tewksbury Golden Age Club.
She was devoted to her children, grandchildren and many friends. She also enjoyed bingo, and trips to the Connecticut casinos with the Tewksbury Senior Groups. She was also well known for her quick wit, hilarious stories, and fabulous sense of humor, according to family members.
Her survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Ronald Tenney, and Karen and Jeffrey Perry, all of Dracut; four grandchildren, Steven, Sharon, Brad and Alexandra; two sisters, Marjorie J. Smith of Arlington and Lillian L. Keating of Somerville; a brother and his wife, Roy and Janis Smith of Somerville; a sister-in-law and her husband, Mirabel and Paul Collins of Medford; several nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Dear Karen & family: Please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of your mother. She was a great lady, a good friend, and someone you enjoyed being with. We had a lot of laughs over the years. She will be greatly missed by her family as well as many friends.
