Carl Sittler Obituary

Carl G. Sittler
Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather

CHELMSFORD -- Carl G. Sittler age 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 9, 2015 at the Lowell General Hospital as a result of complications from a stroke he suffered in December.

He was born and raised in Pennsylvania. Carl enlisted in the Army to serve his country during the Korean War. He was deployed overseas and was also stationed at Fort Devens, being honorably discharged after three years of active service. While stationed stateside, he met and married the love of his life Sandra E. (Picard) Sittler, daugher of the late Victor A. and Thelma M. Picard of Lowell, MA. At the time of his death Carl and Sandra had shared 58 years of marriage.

Carl was a resident of Chelmsford for the past 53 years. He also was the Owner/Proprietor of Carl G. Sittler Inc., an automotive repair business successfully operated in Tewksbury, MA. for over 45 years. He conducted his affairs on his word and a handshake and earned a reputation of Reliability, Integrity, and Fairness.

He was an active member of the Tewksbury Lions Club for many years. He was elected twice as its President and also served on its Board.

Carl was a devoted husband, loving father and gracious grandfather. He most enjoyed time spent with his family. In additional to being an avid Red Sox Fan, he was an ardent tinkerer who could fix most anything, and he especially enjoyed his home.

In addition to his wife Sandra, Carl is survived by his daughter: Carla (Sittler) Destramp and her fiance John Slot of Hudson, NH. His son: Darryl Sittler and his wife Karen of Chelmsford. Grandchildren: Jess Destramp, Victor Sittler, CJ Destramp, Katie Sittler and Devin Sittler. 1 brother: Kenneth Henry and his family of Kutztown, PA. A sister-in-law: Linda Siegelin and her husband Terry of Florida, as well as aunts, nieces and nephews. Carl was predeceased by his mother: Marie Rose Henry, and brothers; Donald Henry and Harold Henry, Jr.

SITTLER -- A time of closure following his cremation will be offered through visiting hours to be held at the ARCHAMBAULT FUNERAL HOME, 309 Pawtucket St., Lowell on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 from 4 to 7 P.M. His family invites you to stay following the visiting hours to celebrate his life through a Memorial Ceremony beginning approximately at 7 P.M. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Carl may be made to the Tewksbury Lions Club, P.O. Box 314, Tewksbury, MA. 01876. Funeral Director Victor J. Archambault Jr.

My deepest condolences to the Sittler Family. Many of the messages left on this memorial speak to the same memories I have of Carl. When I look back at the several years I spent as a young man working with Carl at the shop I realize how fortunate I was .... I did not realize it at the time but Carl was as much an Uncle as a Landlord to me.

The countless times Carl helped someone who needed a boost up or a job for a while... what an amazing man. You don't often meet many people like Carl - especially today in this very different world.

It has been many decades since I worked for Carl, but every so often I had the great fortune to run into him by accident. He would greet you with a handshake and a grin from ear to ear, we would catch up on business, careers and family as if no time had passed at all. Once you were his friend, you were always his friend.

Over the years, being far removed from my time at Carl's Towing, I have often thought that kids in business school could have learned something from Carl and how he ran his business. He treated both customers and employees as if they were family. In all his interactions he demonstrated honesty, integrity, kindness and extreme generosity while still being able to build a successful business, maintain a loving family and find time to give back to his community. By any measure, he was a success.

In particular, what I remember most and perhaps most meaningful, is how Carl always had a soft spot in his heart for those that were down on their luck and just needed a helping hand to get back on their feet. We bore witness to what the kids today would call "random acts of kindness", but there was nothing random about it with Carl. That is just who he was. He was truly a good man. I will miss him.
