Nov. 17, 1956 – Sept. 15, 2021

Dr. David Charles Pickul of Boothbay, Maine passed away suddenly on the morning of September 15th. He was surrounded in spirit by his family, loved ones, and those passed whom he held in his heart.

A native of Ipswich, MA, David is the son of Teresa (Crosti) Pickul and the late Stephen Pickul. He had five brothers and sisters, the late Stephen Pickul, Joe Pickul, Joanne Harder, Jeffrey Pickul, and Patty Dupray, all of whom he teased incessantly. David built a wonderful life in North Andover, and dedicated all of himself to care for his family, as well as his beloved patients or anyone who needed a helping hand, an ear to listen, or a dose of reality.

David spent much of his time growing up on the water with his father and brothers fishing and clamming. He loved spending time with his amazingly misbehaved dogs (because "let dogs be dogs"), his long and rewarding career as a physician in Lowell, time spent in Maine doing Maine stuff, and boat rides. Most of all he loved his "baby", "doll", "beautiful", high school sweetheart, and wife of 41 years, Kimberly Whiston Pickul. Together they raised a growing family, Caitlin and Callie Lekas Pickul, Drew and Maria Pickul, and Chris Pickul and his girlfriend Perri Maduri. He was a loving grandfather of Sylvia Anna Pickul and Tait Peter Lekas Pickul and beloved fun Uncle to 18 nieces and nephews, their partners, and 14 grandnieces and grandnephews and counting.

David was a graduate of Ipswich High School, University of Rhode Island and UMass Medical School.  A top student in his class, David and Kim moved to Washington, D.C. where he completed his residency at George Washington University.  Upon moving back to Massachusetts, David chose Lowell as the home of his medical practice in 1987 and founded the Mill City Medical Group in 2003.

From that first day in 1987, David has continued to make an incredible impact on the Lowell medical community.  He joined Lowell General Hospital in 1991 and since then has spent time as the Chief of the Department of Medicine, President of the Medical Staff, Medical Director of the Physician Hospital Organization, and was the first Chief Medical Officer of Circle Health.  More recently, David was a member of the Circle Health Board of Trustees as well as the Wellforce Board.  He was key in the creation of the notable Wellforce Clinically Integrated Network.

David was humble and respected humbleness in others. He would certainly be uncomfortable with this memorial to his life, but we are sorry David, "Büj", Dad, and Grampy, you deserve tribute and so much more. We will always see you everywhere, hear your voice, and miss you always.

A funeral Mass for David will be celebrated at 10:00am on Thursday, September 23 at St. Michael's Parish in North Andover, MA.  The family asks you to wear masks for the service and for those unable to make the service, mass will be livestreamed with a link accessible on the St. Michael's Website. A private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of David to either St. Jude's Hospital or the MSPCA.

I am sad to hear of Dr. Pickul's passing. I only found out today and I was shocked. Over the years I had worked at LGH and he always had kind words for everyone! He was a great physician and I always had so much respect for him. To his family and especially his wife I know how much you will miss him. He always talked about how proud he was of his family and "the love of his life". He will be sorely missed and my deepest condolences to your entire family.

Every day that goes by I can't believe you are gone. I walk around talking to myself saying Pickul, Pickul, Pickul, now what am I going to do?? You saved my life on more than one occasion and for that I am truly grateful. You put up with me and never gave up on me. You brought me back to great health. I can't thank you enough for all of your encouragement and patience. I hope you know how much you meant to so many people. I promise you will not be forgotten!! I hope you are watching down on us from Heaven and will continue to keep us safe. Missing you Doc

My sincerest condolences to all of the family, friends, patients and colleagues of Dr. David Pickul. His approach to patient care should be the prototype for medical students in both the classroom and in their residency. He and his associates have built a practice in Mill City Medical that emulates his caring ways. I have been a patient for almost 20 years, and have siblings, cousins and friends that are patients who also feel that his passing is a great loss. RIP my friend.

I wish I had the right words to say. This has been hard on everyone that knew him. I can't imagine what your family is going through. We all have been blessed to have had a friendship with Dave, as he treated everyone he knew as just that. Kim, family and his colleagues, I am so sorry for your loss.

Truly a sublime individual. Like others, having him for a doc for 30 years I considered Dr Pickul my Dr and a friend. He save my life a couple times.... Literally. He was truly a rare and gifted guy. He told me he originally wanted to be a marine biologist but a professor said he was exceptionally smart and persuaded him to go into medicine. Thank the good Lord for that professor.. for so many of us. Rest In Peace Doc, too bad we never got to snowmobile together or have you up at Sebago Lake like we talked about.

I´m so very sorry for your great loss. I couldn´t believe it & was very sad when I found out. I´ve only known him for two years & found him to be so thorough, kind & down to earth. I´ll never find another doctor like him. He´s one of a kind. He knew I was widowed & asked me if I still missed my husband. He said he didn´t know what he would do if he lost his wife. He didn´t even want to think about it. I will miss him. Rest In Peace dear Dr. Pickul.

Greatest condolences to Kim and the family. Dr. Pickul was a great doctor but was especially a friend to his patients. He was always so good to Jimmy especially in the years after his stroke. In return, Jim always had the greatest respect for him. The world has lost a truly gifted man.

As a nurse at a local nursing home I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Pickul. His patients truly loved him as he did them. He was kind and compassionate towards them, really listening to them often holding their hands.. I know the medical community will sadly miss Dr. pickle. He was such a kind soul.

To Dr Pickul's family, I am so sorry for your loss. He was my PCP for over 25 years. He was so detailed and thorough. I loved him as my doctor, I often bragged to others how great he is. Not only was he a great doctor, he was a greater person. I can not get this out of my mind, and just had to say how much I will miss him. Should I be so privileged to know his burial location, I would love to say a prayer at the site. Doctor Pickul rest in peace.

I'm deeply sorry for your loss but also for mine. He was a great doctor to me for about 30 years .he was easy to talk to and share your problems . I feel I've lost a true friend as i know the world has lost a great man. I was in his office late afternoon on 9/14/21 and he said he was slow with the computer because his dog ate his glasses. I said "I wouldn't take that excuse from a grade schooler never mind you". He replied "you'd reply just like my wife, if you had put them away that would never had happened". I 'll miss him dearly. My deepest sympathy, Jan Vigneault
