A Faithful Servant of Christ was called home to the Lord on January 28, 2017

LOWELL -- Eldon Walter Chapman, 84, left this world to be with his Lord on Saturday January 28 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Wilda (Simmons) Chapman, with whom he shared 58 years of loving marriage.

Born in Nowata, Oklahoma, on April 5, 1932, he was the fourth and last surviving child of the late Augustus and Lottie (Starr) Chapman. He was predeceased by siblings, Augustus and Louis Chapman and Iris (Chapman) Brown.

Eldon was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Nowata Oklahoma, and in the fall of 1950, he began three years at Kansas Technical Institute in Topeka, Kansas. He was drafted following his third year and joined the Army in September of 1953. He was sent overseas to Austria for a year and returned to the United States where he was stationed at Fort Devens, MA. While at Fort Devens, he met his wife Wilda Simmons at a dance at the Social Club in 1956. They were married on November 8, 1958 at the First United Methodist Church in Lowell. Eldon reenlisted in the Army and following eight years of service he was Honorably Discharged in 1962. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal.

In 1962, the Chapman family moved to Lowell where they have been ever since, residing for many years in the Centralville section of the city.

Eldon was employed by the VA Hospital in Bedford, MA where he worked until his retirement in 1987. Following his retirement, Eldon worked at the Mitre Corporation, he also worked as a Constable for many years in the Greater Lowell area. He spent the last 15 years assisting his son Brian at Mill City Environmental.He was there from the first day the doors were opened in 2001 through his last day. He was one of the main gears that helped keep things moving. He was the Mr. C of MCE.

Eldon was active supporter and member of the Merrimack Valley Branch of the NAACP and served at its president from September 1974-December 1974. Eldon was always extremely active in the church community joining the congregation at First United Baptist Church in Lowell where he served as a deacon and as a volunteer on the education board.

Along with his wife Wilda, they have also been members of the Zion Baptist Church of Lynn with Reverend Dr. Everett Frye and most recently have been well respected members of the Calvary Baptist Church in Haverhill where Eldon served as Deacon and led Bible Studies.

In 1992 and 2005, Eldon was awarded the Walter D. Medley, Sr. award celebrating the outstanding man of Calvary who show their love, dedication and commitment to serving the Lord. In 1996, Eldon was awarded the Christian Education Appreciation Award, and in 2005, Eldon was given an appreciation award for his faithful service, dedication as a co-chair of the deaconate.

In addition to his loving wife Wilda, he leaves four sons Sheldon Chapman and his wife Karen of Townsend, Brian Chapman and his wife Mary of Dracut, Lionel Chapman and his wife Lorrie of Lowell and August "Gus" Chapman, II of Lowell. He also leaves his five adoring grandchildren, Presley Chapman, Ryan Chapman, Sterling Chapman, Kalee Chapman and Lauren Chapman; also a host of nieces and nephews.

CHAPMAN -- Relatives and friends are invited to Eldon's Life Celebration on Friday from 4 until 8 PM at the McKENNA-OUELLETTE FUNERAL HOME, 327 Hildreth Street. Relatives and friends will be received on Saturday morning from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the Calvary Baptist Church, 13 Ashland Street, Haverhill. Funeral Services will follow in the Church at 12:00 PM. A reception will follow Services in the downstairs hall. Burial with Military Honors will be held privately on Monday in the Lowell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Eldon's name may be made to: Calvary Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, PO Box 781, Haverhill, MA 01830.

To the Chapman family,

Deacon Chapman was a great friend. During my time at Calvary, I sat next to him every Sunday. He modeled to me what being a Christian meant. He always took time to meet me outside of church to talk about the things of God. I am praying for the family.
