George Leahey Obituary

George B. Leahey, Esq.
78, respected Lowell attorney

George B. Leahey, Esq., a well known gentleman and highly regarded attorney died peacefully at his home in Tewksbury on Wednesday surrounded by his wife and sons.

George was the husband of Donna M. (Gilooly) Leahey, with whom he would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on August 29th. After they met as infants, they were destined to be together. She was the love of his life and Donna and George were a wonderful couple.

A fifth generation Lowellian, he was born on August 20, 1939, to the late Dr. Brendan D. Leahey and the late Mary Josephine (O'Donnell) Leahey and was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church.

Attorney Leahey attended Lowell public schools. After serving in the United States Coast Guard, he graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy in 1962. In Lowell and at Georgetown, he treasured his educational pursuits and made friendships that lasted his lifetime. In 1966, Attorney Leahey earned his Juris Doctorate from Boston College Law School.

He then practiced law in Lowell for the next fifty two years. From 1966 to 1976, Attorney Leahey was an associate and then partner of Goldman, Goldman, Curtis, Leahey and Latham. In 1967, he served as a special Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex County for a year. From 1976 until his death, he maintained his own practice with a concentration of estate planning, estate administration, real estate law and business law. For almost thirty years, he was trust counsel for Enterprise Bank & Trust.

Besides his family and friends, his loves included golf, dancing, travel, history, genealogy, sweets, all things Lowell, Georgetown, Rye and, of course, Vesper. George enjoyed life, a good conversation, and the rum punch at Barnacle Billy's (a family favorite). He valued fairness, integrity, honesty, respect, and the courage to do the right thing.

An active member of several legal organizations, Attorney Leahey was a member and past President of the Greater Lowell Bar Association; former Director of Merrimack Valley Estate and Business Planning Council; member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Merrimack Valley Conveyancers Association, and the Real Estate Bar Association of Massachusetts, Inc.

He was also an active member of various civil and fraternal organizations, Attorney Leahey was past President of the Trustees of The Ayer Home; Trustee of the Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank; member of the Board of Governors of Lowell General Hospital; Corporator of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell; past President of the Lowell Association for the Blind; former Vice President and Treasurer of the Greater Lowell Chamber of Commerce; former President and Director of Vesper Country Club; former Trustee of Saints Medical Center, Inc.; and former Director of the Lowell Rotary Club. He also held memberships at Long Meadow Golf Club and Abenaqui Country Club. Attorney Leahey was also active in Voices of the Faithful.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Attorney Brian W. and Sophia C. (Cigliano) Leahey, of Lowell, and Attorney Mark B. and Stephanie M. (O'Connor) Leahey, of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren Parker M. Leahey and Meritt C. Leahey, of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Alice D. Leahey and her husband Robert P. Congdon, of Venice, California; a brother, Dr. Alan B. and Kathleen S. (Smith) Leahey of Sunset, South Carolina; three nieces, Kelly Leahey Schoepke, Colleen Leahey McKeegan and Jennifer A. Leahey; his aunt Ann M. (Muras) O'Donnell of Lowell and many cousins.

George was also the father of the late G. Brent Leahey, Jr., Esq. and brother of the late Grant A. Leahey.

He truly epitomized the term gentleman in how he lived each day and in the many ways he touched others with his kindnesses. The beauty of a life well lived like his is that it is never forgotten. Please be assured of my thoughts and prayers for you and yours during this difficult time. Fondly,

I had the pleasure of playing golf with George and Donna at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, CA at a Paletta family reunion. I also enjoyed a harbor cruise that same night around San Diego with many Lowell friends. George and Donna " cut a rug"" all night long, on the cruise. If there had been a contest, George and Donna would have won all the awards. It was so much fun watching two very good dancers having fun. George, Rest in Peace, Donna, please know you have many friends who admire, love and support you. Affectionately, Cathy Ronan

To The Leahey Family,
I had the honor of knowing your father when I had worked at Vesper from 1990 to 2001.
He was a Great Gentleman and very easy to talk with. And we had plenty of laughs.
He took very good care of me, when I did worked there.
