Jacob Swartz Obituary

Jacob Swartz

of Lowell

LOWELL -- Mr. Jacob Swartz, former resident of Lowell, MA entered into rest, November 14, 2010. Born in Romania in 1913, he came to the United States with his mother and two of his sisters in about 1920 to greet his father, whom he barely knew, and who had immigrated years earlier to earn money to bring his family to this country. Mr. Swartz, remembering running into the woods in Romania with the family's clothes on his back when soldiers came into the villages, greatly appreciated being a U.S. citizen and loved this country. He believed that if you had to pay a lot of taxes, it was because you made a lot of money.

He was the former owner of Jack's Used Cars and Parts in Lowell. His business success brought him the Presidency of New England Wreckers Association during World War II, where he was responsible for collecting scrap iron for the war effort from businesses throughout New England and produced more than every other region in the country. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Long Meadow Golf Club in Lowell and was well known throughout the area for winning golf championships. For a time, his score of 66 was the lowest in the club's history. In 1991, he was unanimously accorded a Life Membership there as the "highest honor" bestowed upon a member. An excellent athlete, he had earned letters in track, football, baseball and golf in high school. Mr. Swartz was a former trustee of Temple Beth El in Lowell, as well as treasurer and vice president of Bnai Brith.

As the only brother with four sisters, he loved his role as head of the family, all of whom he adored. He leaves his beloved family, two daughters, Selma Swartz Bromberg of Weston, and Marilyn Swartz-Lloyd of Boston; his son-in-law, Tony Swartz-Lloyd of Boston; a granddaughter, Sarah Bromberg of Pittsburgh and a grandson, Daniel Bromberg of Cambridge; one remaining sister, Edith Marks of New York; and many nephews and nieces. He had been married to the late Edith Filler Swartz for over seventy years.

SWARTZ -- The funeral and Shiva will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in his memory to either: the Jack and Edith Swartz Endowment Fund for the Advancement of Nursing Practice at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Office of Development, 330 Brookline Avenue Boston, MA 02215 or Partners Health Care at Home, Office of Development, 281 Winter Street Waltham, MA 02451

As a former resident of Lowell, I knew "Jack" and had done business with him when he had his car lot on Middlesex St. He was a mild mannered well respected gentleman whom I looked up to. Please accept my condolences on his passing.
