Westford

James (Jay) MacGregor Meikle, III, age 62, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021 at his home in Westford surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Boston on April 30, 1958, beloved son of Sally A. (Bealand) Meikle of Port St. Lucie, FL and the late James MacGregor Meikle, II. Jay was raised in Westford and a graduate of Westford Academy where he excelled in sports. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served for almost 10 years and went on to attend the Wayland Baptist University where he earned his Bachelor's degree.

Prior to his retirement, Jay worked in the telecommunications industry with several independent military contractors.

Jay lived in many places, such as England, Maryland and Hawaii. One of his favorites was San Antonio, TX where he lived for many years. In 2011 he moved to Westford to be nearer to family. Among his many interests, he most enjoyed his Scottish heritage and wore his kilt on many an occasion including riding on his motorcycle. He also enjoyed playing golf with his friends and was an avid Corvette enthusiast, having owned many over the years.

Jay touched so may lives with his larger-than-life personality and big heart. His presence lit up every room he entered and his light will continue to shine through those who loved him. He will be missed by his many friends throughout the world.

Besides his mother, Sally, he is survived by his four siblings, Cheryl O'Malley and her husband, Robert of Littleton, Jeff Meikle and his wife, Elaine of Tyngsborough, John Meikle and his wife, Rita of Ashburnham and Chandra Nelson and her husband, Joe of Westford; his beloved girlfriend, Laura Curtis of San Antonio, TX; his nieces and nephews, Bob, Chris, Samantha, Stephanie, Logan, Cameron and Joseph; also several aunts, many cousins and dear friends.

Thanks to all who took the time to write of their feelings and thoughts of my son Jay. It's uplifting to read about the times you spent with him. He did bring joy and happiness to so many of his friends, and every person became Jay's friend, for life. I miss him and know that we'll meet again in heaven. In the meantime I hope you all will be able to join us this August (I hope) when we have his memorial service. The plans are in the works as Jay so wanted to have all his family and friends gather together and have a "party" to celebrate his life, and that's what we're going to do. Love to you all and I hope to see you this summer. Sally Meikle Jay's mom who lives in Florida.

We knew Jay separately and then as a couple. Bonnie was stationed with him in England. Greg played football with him in Maryland. Then we met and realized we both knew Jay. We had many good times when Jay and Greg played on the same softball team. Jay arranged for us all to go to an Orioles World Series game, we had to work 3 innings in a concession stand! It was great reconnecting with him at the Chicksands reunions and through Facebook. He will be greatly missed.

Jay was very thoughtful as a teenager/young man. I was senior in a new school (Westford) and did not have a date to the Sr. Prom. Even though we were not that familiar with one another, he made sure I went to the prom and I was grateful to him for the many kindnesses he showed to me.

Jay and I were coworkers, we traveled to the middle east together. He was a great guy and a good friend. One time he let me borrow a kilt for a wedding. One of the funniest conversations I have ever had.

Me: Jay, do you have a kilt I can borrow?
Jay: yeah, what type of event is it? Formal or informal?
Me: you have kilts for different occasions?
Jay: what type of Scottsman do you take me for?

he will be missed

Jay was a dear friend from Westford Academy, we graduated together. Jay always reached out to keep us class mates connected. I always enjoyed following his larger than life exploits on Face Book with his Corvette, golfing, traveling, vising friends and always a kind word, generous spirit and big smile. I will miss Jay tremendously and extend my prayers and condolences to his family and friends. RIP my friend, I know you are in a better place surrounded by love and no longer in pain.

My husband, James Gambino, met Jay when they were stationed in England together. They were friends/brothers, and kept in touch throughout the years. When my husband was diagnosed 1 1/2 years ago, they shared something else together...the fear, the pain, fatigue, etc. Jay took Jimmy under his wing and shared many of his own personal experiences and insights and fears. They helped each other cope. They would check in almost weekly, depending on who was feeling better at that time. Jay was a fighter and he instilled that in Jimmy. I am grateful to Jay for giving us more time together. He did that; he gave my Jimmy the guidance and the courage and the strength to go on, because he was the most awesome example. My husband, Jimmy, is now on Hospice, but in my heart, I know that Jay is up in heaven, just waiting to greet my Jimmy,, when he gets there. Thank you, Jay.

My old friend, your passing leaves a void in my heart! I couldn't have asked for a better friend, though separated by time and miles our last meeting was as though we had seen each other only the day before. You fought long and hard and now I pray for your eternal peace surrounded by those you loved who went before you. I pray for comfort and peace for your beloved family who I know were the center of your being. I will miss you old buddy!

I served with Jay at RAF Chicksands. We both played on the two time Champion, "Fightin' Chicks" football team. Jay was an exceptional ballplayer and even a better person. I lost touch with Jay some years ago but feel his loss nonetheless. It was my pleasure to have known Jay. My deepest sympathies for his closest friends and, of course, his entire family. They say only the good die young, Jay was one of the best.

I served with Jay in the Air Force, Able Flt., RAF Chicksands, and I can easily recall his laughter, booming voice and gentle heart: Jay was fun, kind, and genuine. My, heartfelt, condolences to the Meikle family and to his many friends.

Jay and I were stationed together at RAF Chicksands and not only worked on the same flight - Able - but lived only a few doors from each other in the dorm. What I mostly remembered about Jay was they way his whole face seemed to light up when he smiled - which was often. Especially when pulling a prank or two on those long mids. It is always sad when someone dies but more so when that person is so full of life. My deepest sympathies to family and friends.

Jay was my Air Force brother. We're both from Mass., but met at R.A.F. Chicksands in England in 1977. We all became very close and did everything together. When he returned to Mass., we continued to stay in touch, golf and reminisce about our military service. Had a great time at his 60th birthday celebration in Maine. He is abundantly loved and will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to his family.
