CHELMSFORD - John Joseph Heffernan, 90, a longtime resident of Chelmsford died Monday December 25, 2017 at the Lowell General Hospital.

He was the husband of Mary Heffernan with who he celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary on Sept. 28th.

Born in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late Daniel and Emma Heffernan. He was raised in Dorchester and graduated from Dorchester High School with the Class of 1944.

During WWII he served in the US Army. After the war he worked at the Quincy Naval Shipyard as a welder and in 1990 he retired from Nefor fabrication Shop of Lawrence.

He was an avid painter. He enjoyed skin diving and playing tennis.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons and their wives; Neil and Donna Heffernan of Auburn, NH, Kevin and Patricia Heffernan of Dracut, MA, Jack and Sheryl Heffernan of Chelmsford and Brian Heffernan of Chelmsford; a daughter and her husband, Maureen and Patrick Logue of Dracut, MA; two brothers and their wives, Daniel and Ann Heffernan of McDonough, GA and Robert and Joan Heffernan of E. Bridgewater, MA; thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Gary Heffernan; a daughter, Elizabeth Batten; a son-in-law, Ralph Batten and brother Timothy Heffernan.

HEFFERNAN - There are no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday Jan. 2, 2018 at 11 AM at DOLAN FUNERAL HOME, 106 Middlesex St., Chelmsford, MA 01863.
