John L. Sullivan Jr.

1946 - 2022

Loving husband, father and grandfather;

Atty. John L. Sullivan, Jr. 76, of Chelmsford, a well-known Greater Lowell attorney, passed away on Saturday September 17, 2022, at the High Pointe Hospice House in Havehill. He was the beloved husband of the late Anne C. (Grimshaw) Sullivan who predeceased him on February 22, 2012 after 42 years of marriage.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, July 13, 1946, he was the son of the late John L. and the late Virginia (Dunlavey) Sullivan. John L. was a graduate of St. Michael Grammar School, Keith Academy and Providence College. He received his Juris Doctorate from Suffolk University Law School in 1975.

John was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the United States Army Infantry and served a one year tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Highly decorated for his service, Lt. Sullivan was the recipient of the Bronze Star.

He was a partner with the law firm of Qua, Hall, Harvey and Walsh of Lowell and Chelmsford for many years in the general practice of law. Atty. Sullivan then operated his own private practice in Lowell from 1995 to 2005 and was later admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States.

He also served as General and Labor Counsel for the Dracut Public Schools for over 25 years and was elected President of the Council of School Attorneys for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was a member of both the Massachusetts and Greater Lowell Bar Associations.

In 2005, John was appointed as an Assistant Clerk Magistrate for the Trial Court of the Commonwealth assigned to the Malden District Court.

He truly enjoyed this final chapter of his law career and felt it was an opportunity to share his legal experiences in a meaningful and helpful way with those not familiar with the legal system.

Among his many interests, he was a longtime member of the Long Meadow Golf Club where his main objective was to keep his golf ball "in play." But first and foremost, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

John is survived by his beloved sons John L. Sullivan III, Esq. and his wife Jennifer of Natick, MA and Christopher J. Sullivan and his wife Kellie of North Chelmsford, MA; two granddaughters Cheshire and Braeden Sullivan; two grandsons C.J. Sullivan and Jack Ryan Sullivan; and many friends met along the way.

Friends may call at the O'DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST. in Lowell on Thursday September 22, 2022, from 4 to 7 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass to be celebrated on Friday morning at ST. MICHAEL CHURCH in Lowell at 11 o'clock. Burial to follow in St. Patrick Cemetery in Lowell.
