NORTH CHELMSFORD, MA -- Joseph B. "JB" Surrette, 86, a long time resident of Lowell, died peacefully on November 18, 2015 at Lowell General Hospital following a period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of Alice M. (Tymowicz) Surrette, with whom he would have celebrated 64 loving years of marriage on December 16th.

Born in Wilmington on August 7, 1929, he was a son of the late Walter A. and Beatrice (Supernant) Surrette. Joseph proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant with the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict until he was honorably discharged.

He enjoyed a long career working at the Veterans Administration Edith Nourse Rogers Medical Center in Bedford, where he retired as the Chief of Patient Services. Following his retirement, he and his wife Alice spent countless hours volunteering at the Medical Center.

In his spare time, Joe enjoyed playing golf, where he was a member of leagues in both MA and FL. He was a member of the DAV as well as a lifetime member of both the Chelmsford Lodge of Elks, BPOE 2310 and the VFW Post 662, where he served on the Honor Guard.

In addition to his wife, Joseph is survived and will be deeply missed by his two children, Joseph A. Surrette of Hemet, CA, and Patricia A. Giles and her husband Robert of Upton, MA; two grandchildren, Jerrica G. Niles and her husband Robert of Preston, CT, and Jillian A. Martin and her husband Robert of Lowell; a brother, Paul E. Surrette and his wife Peggy of Wilmington, MA and Bradenton, FL; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Surrette of Highland, MD.

He was predeceased by his sister Gladys M. Surrette, and his brothers Walter A. Surrette, Jr., and Robert W. Surrette.

I had the honor of getting to know Joe and Alice, while working for Connected Living at Emeritus, in Chelmsford. I sat with them once a week, assisting with writing e-mails and playing games on the computer. Alice, I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I enjoyed my time with both of you and know that he will be sorely missed. I pray that you feel the peace of God's loving embrace during this very difficult time.
