I am thinking of Josh today, not because I ever knew him, but because of our "commonalities". I am a 78 yo Army Infantry combat veteran of the Vietnam War and I lost a High School friend to that war at the age of 21. At the time of his death, we were both stationed at Fort Riley. Josh was born in Lowell, Mass. and I lived in Lowell for a few years after I returned. I currently live in Maine as did he. For these reasons, and acknowledging his untimely death in Afghanistan at the age of 21, I am thinking of Josh today.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Bernard Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Joshua M. Bernard US Marine Lance Corporal. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. You'd give the world just to hug that son of yours one last time, but you will hug him again in eternity. All our earthly afflictions are just for a moment when compared with the weight of glory he has in store for us. Joshua is home now, safe! He's packed so much into 21 years, and he's honored Jesus Christ here on earth and Jesus has honored him! I've just recently been led to pray for our soldiers (U.S, Aust., Canadians, British, Dutch and the others), it's fighting for them no matter how far away we are from them. Thanks God for such a man as Joshua and his family!

.........you know, here in London I was thumbing through the Sunday papers when I came accross the slightly blurred picture of a dying soldier being attended to by his fellow comrades: this was Joshua. Still clutching his rifle: this was Joshua. In a field far from home with the dust and the dirt of an insignificant field:this was Joshua. A real person, someones little boy, it could have been my boy: this was Joshua. Of all the pictures of war, this one touched my heart and I too grieve for someones lovely boy:
This was Joshua........

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

My sympathies go out to your family with the loss of your son. As someone who has commanded our young people in Afghanistan and Iraq, I can honestly say that those that fight for us now are the best trained and motivated Marines, Soldiers, Airmen and Sailors that this country has ever had. Those brave men and women in these two countries volunteered to be in our military during a trying time - knowing that eventually they would be put in harm's way. These conflicts are far removed now from the news, consciousness and everyday lives of most Americans. Please know that some of us believe fervently in this cause and appreciate the huge sacrifices that a few continue to make for the many. Our son is also in Afghanistan. May God bless your son and take care of your family in this dark time.

My deepest sympathies to your family in the loss of your son/brother/grandson. Heaven is a little bit sweeter now. My father was a Marine that fought hand to hand in Iwo Jima in WW 2.

I am so sorry for the loss of your son. It is but for him, that we may enjoy the privileges and freedoms in this country. Thank you for his and your sacrifice. He has kept us safe. May God now hold him in the palm of his hand. He is at peace..finally. God Bless him and your family.
