Mary Mogan Obituary

Mary P. Mogan

-- "Was a retired Wilmington teacher,
and avid supporter of Lowell Adult
Education Program."

CHELMSFORD -- Mary P. (Pollard) Mogan, 93, of Chelmsford, died Monday, November 22, 2010, at her home after a brief illness. She was wife of Dr. Patrick J. Mogan, with whom she celebrated their Sixty Third Wedding Anniversary this past July.

Born August 22, 1917, in Lowell, she was the eleventh of thirteen children of the late Samuel S. and the late Mary Ellen (Carroll) Pollard, and was educated in the Lowell School System, graduating from Lowell High School. She then graduated from Lowell Teachers' College, and attained her Masters Degree from Boston University.

She made her home in the Belvidere Section of the City until eight years ago, when she relocated to Chelmsford, and was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church.

Mary began her teaching career in Chadwick, Massachusetts, taught at Chelmsford High School in the 1940's and retired from the Wilmington School System after 38 years in education. Her passion was to tell her family about their history with detailed stories of people and occurrences from their past. Traveling was her hobby and with her husband she spent her winters in Boca Raton, FL. Also she met many Heads of State while traveling throughout the United States and Europe, and also spent a few days with Prince Charles. Most of her time was spent in support of her husband's endeavors, and along with him devoted time to the Human Services Corporation, the Model Cities Program, but most of all, she was most proud of their accomplishment to bring Lowell the first urban National Park in the United States, the Lowell National Historical Park. She was an active supporter of the Lowell Adult Education Program, and the roles played by the various ethnic families in the establishment of the Lowell Historic Park.

In addition to her husband, Dr. Mogan, her survivors include her nieces and nephews, Ann Marie Splaine of Billerica, Dr. Edward F. Splaine and his wife, Jacqueline, of Manchester, MA, Louise Kavanaugh of Westford, James S. Donohue of Lowell, Mary Ellen Fitzpatrick and her husband, Joseph, of Tyngsboro, Anne Murphy and her husband, Robert, of North Andover, James J. Pollard Jr. and his wife, Maureen, of Lowell, Joseph R. Pollard and his wife, Beth, of Newbury, Martha Gallant and her husband, Mark, of Tewksbury, and Sam Pollard of Los Angeles, CA; as well many grand nieces and grand nephews.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Helen V. Pollard, George S. Pollard, John J. Pollard, Esther Pollard Splaine, Anne G. Pollard, Agnes C. Pollard, Samuel S. Pollard, Catherine Pollard, Louise Pollard Donohoe, Joseph J. Pollard, and James J. Pollard, and her nephew, Francis Donohoe.

Mary Pollard Mogan was the essence of kindness. She always knew how to make one feel special and loved. Consistently positive and upbeat, she was a wonderful role model for all who were blessed to know her. Our sympathy is extended to the Mogan and Pollard families.
